Bennett has a long way to go to be a good NHLer, because right now he's playing at the Zack Kassian level for the Flames. I hope there is more than that from the highest pick in Calgary Flame history, and I expect there is. But at this point, we should not be holding up Bennett as a shining example of anything.
Over to the bashfest of the Oilers and everything Edmonton, yes, Bennett is infinitely better than Poolparty, no doubt about that at this point. But that is what happens when you are ruined by a poorly run organization. Poolparty is garbage, and that is because the Oilers turned him into what he is. Just more proof of E=NG.

disagree ... but this is an Edmonton thread.
JP has always looked like a guy that has trouble thinking the game, this year it looks like the Oilers brass are seeing the same.
They don't have the depth to demote good options, but they are, which says a lot about where his game is.

Bennett is currently #10 in his draft class in points. If you take out the two late-rounders who out-performed expectations and only focus on first round picks, he jumps to #8.
I mean, we all wish he was in the Top 4 in scoring out of that group to reflect his draft position and also that his PPG was higher. But I don't think he's doing that bad overall plus he brings a lot of other things that top scorers from that group don't.
(And I'm trying to find a way to bring this back to E=NG but when Draisaitl is number one in points from the 2014 draft class and was only picked one spot ahead of Bennett, it's hard to do. But maybe our intense (and appropriate!) E=NG focus plays into some of the criticism Bennett gets - he's not performing as well as an Edmonton player who was drafted only one spot ahead of him which maybe makes it appear like he's doing worse than he actually is?)

No. The trade was one for one.

I agree with this, but I end up conceptualising Bennett's development differently. I don't think there is a linear function where a player improves, therefore he gets more expected points. Sometimes, a little bit of improvement makes a huge difference in terms of point totals. Sometimes a lot of improvement makes only a small difference. That's why player's "Breakout" - because theyre only a few minor adjustments away from having a "tipping point moment" in their career.
When I watch Bennett play, there's been a massive improvement in his game - his vision his better, his processing time is better, his ability to use team mates is better, his ability to slow down the game is better, his ability to thread the needle with passing is better, his defensive awareness is better - yet there has been little to no improvement in his point totals. But when you watch the player, what exactly is he missing from being a really good player? This is what I think he's missing:
1) A better shot in terms of accuracy = more goals, more rebounds for teammates
2) Stronger with breakouts = more time in offensive zone
3) Better awareness of where to be in the offensive zone when one of his teammates have the puck, so his teammates can use him better = more goals and more assists because play is kept alive better
If he got better at these three things, he'd be a top 6 forward on the flames because of how multi-dimensional he is otherwise. But just the fact that hes only missing three elements to an otherwise complete game is a massive improvement to where he was a season ago. And given that he's only 22, I'd bet there is better than even odds that he develops into a 20+ goal scorer by age 24

Hall wasn't traded for magic beans, he was traded for a much shorter beanstalk.

I see Poolparty as this amazing attacking player with a great defensive game, but at the same time I see that he cruises a lot is indecisive and lazy.

Good to see that once again, it's the "coaches fault". Yes...keep blaming the coaches. Don't analyze the roster!

With their resounding win over the Capitals today the Phoenix Coyotes did two things:
1. Managed to win a game in DC, which is something the Oilers are incapable of doing.
2. Pulled into a tie with the Oilers with an even number of games played.

Staples really is just a moronic petulant child.
I always wondered who would fall for childish beer marketing campaigns like Molson Canadian “TEAM CANS” which are the equivalent of stickers to a kid.
Now I know.
Staples & his childish cohort are right in that moronic childish wheelhouse ready to be duped.

Does Staples still play the old "I'm not a sports journalist, I'm just a fan with a blog" schtick whenever someone calls out his blatant bias (while ignoring the obvious difference that real fan bloggers don't post their blog on the website for a major local newspaper)?

How does his superiors not pull the plug on this guy? How many times does this guy have to embarrass himself? Remember he critiqued the media for their picks regarding last season's awards. I'm not sure how he gets away with critiquing real accredited hockey media.
