Default 2019 Rugby World Cup Thread

As it is less than a week out, I thought I would start a thread.

Point 1:

Has anyone seen a Canadian broadcast schedule?

https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/

Picks:

Heart:

Aussies, I would love to see them make some noise. They have produced some of my favourite players of all time, I mean Tim Horan!

Head:

Kiwi's, I can't identify a nation that has that much depth, that being said they left experienced props at home.

I still don't see the Northern Hemisphere matching the skill and speed of the Kiwi's.

I could see the Bok's taking it as well, they always bring a lot of meat up front, but now have some quality in the backs as well.

Also, there are 3 local Calgary boys on the Canadian team.

I think that TSN has the rights and they are probably broadcasting virtually everything. Canada is basically going to get slaughtered. They went 0-3 in the Pacific series (whatever that thing is) and basically haven't been able to close out a game since 2015, or maybe before that. I'll be watching, but expect Canada to go 0-3.

I think that the Kiwis win and I do think that the northern teams put in a respectable showing. They've had a good spell in general and it should be fun!

You're not getting up early on the 20th for Japan vs. Russia? Some rugby fan you are.

That triple header on the 21st is just epic. I can't wait.

This Cup seems wide open. Obviously the ABs are the favs but any of England, Wales, Ireland, South Africa, or Australia could could win. Heck I'll even say France, Scotland, Japan, and Argentina have a chance.

Japan don't have Eddie Jones which is a big loss for them.

Not long now! Here are my most anticipated must watch games:

Sep 21 - Australia vs Fiji: The Fijians are on the rise playing some of the world’s most exciting Rugby. Australia is also fun to watch with half their team also being Pacific Islanders. Should be high scoring fun!

Sep 21 - France vs Argentina: Two fun to watch evenly matched teams. Will also likely decide 2nd place in Pool C.

Sep 21 - New Zealand vs South Africa. Have I mentioned how epic this triple header is? Two of the favourites and when they met in The Rugby Championship it ended in a tie. If you can only watch one round robin game this tournament it should be this one.

Sep 29 - Australia vs Wales: The best of the Northern vs Southern Hemisphere matchups and will likely decide pool D. Will be a good barometer for the 6 Nations champs to see if they can could compete against the other southern teams.

Oct 5 - England vs Argentina: I would like to see England be upset in the pool stage. This is probably the best chance of that happening

Oct 9 - Wales vs Fiji: I like Fiji. I really like Pool D. Should be a good one.

Oct 13 - Namibia vs Canada: Both teams will be 0-3. Will Canada win a game? The bookies think they have a chance. Stay tuned!

Oct 13 - Japan vs. Scotland: Last game for the hosts which will likely determine 2nd place in Pool A. Scotland probably takes this but my god it would be fun to see Japan win.

October 13: No. Canada should get out to a 10-15 lead, only to let the game drop over he final half hour for a 25-21 loss (or something like that). It's how we do at this point.

Doing my best to catch games here and there, but the timezone isnt helping.

Really enjoyed the AB/RSA match, I'm going to watch the Ireland/Scotland game later today.

Down load the app

It shows games in your time zone and you can import the schedule into your calendar

What do we think of the Reece Hodge try saving tackle that concussed the Fijian? There was no penalty given during the game but it has been cited as a red card offence with a suspension hearing soon.

It looked ok in real time but slow motion catches a possible shoulder charge and contact with the head. My thoughts are Hodge tried to wrap his arms but the Fijian lowering his shoulder prevented this so no red card. Could have maybe been a yellow for a high tackle though.

^ to me that's a dangerous tackle, plain and simple.

Yup. It's a dangerous tackle with contact to the head.

I would guess he's pretty much done.

I don't recall Reece HOdge being a dirty player or a head hunter.

He made a number of odd decisions in that game, I can't find a video of it, but he rucked a Fijian from the Fiji side back onto his own side, really odd.

I think the attempt to wrap was there from this angle, but as you mentioned slowed down it looks bad.

I think his bell was ringing for large parts of that game. He made some really bad decisions after the got trucked the first time in the game.

There have been some great matches so far. I was not impressed with Scotlands outing against Ireland. Lots of handling errors.

I am not sure how I feel about all the TMO involvement. It is good they are taking time getting the calls right but sometimes it really slows down the play.

Well the TMO hasn't called back a try during the convert like they did in 2015 Eng v Fiji game so thats a step in the right direction.

Potential upset incoming. Uruguay was a 28 point underdog vs Fiji. They lead 24-12 at the half. Fiji is obviously still feeling the impact of that intensely physical Australia game only 4 days ago.

Why are they playing an afternoon game on a Wednesday anyways? I almost forgot about it.

Uruguay wins! Probably the 2nd biggest upset ever after Japan South Africa. Hopefully Canada can pull off a similar surprise tomorrow.

3 games for Hodge seems harsh, almost as harsh as having Fiji play game 4 days apart.
