You know how it was great last year when Ryan and Mangiapane provided some additional offence when the top line went cold?

Well that can stop now. Your best players need to be your best players, simple as that.

There's a silver lining in all this. The playoff cutoff in the West is currently only 86 points. The Flames can get there with 63 points in their remaining 58 games. Not unattainable.

Admittedly, that cutoff is likely to increase a bit by season's end, but still...

You just can’t overcome foundational issues.

Backlund is not a top six player.

Frolik/Mangiapane/Bennett, are not top six players.

You can’t just magically overcome a pure lack of talent. Sure hard work can take you so far (and if the team wanted to start working hard for 60 minutes it would be refreshing), but regardless of everything else this team isn’t put together properly and you can’t overcome that.

Depends on the return. If it’s packaged with a cap dump like Frolik and another B level prospect or pick to a bottom feeder for someone like Mantha or Zibanejad I might interested. I’d actually look at trying for get Ryan Strome, who’s acquisition cost shouldn’t be ridiculous and he’s currently at a PPG in New York.

Zibanejad
Monahan
Strome
Backlund

Done with Jankowski.

There are only 5 teams in the NHL with a worse winning % than the Flames.

What annoys me is this was a must win. Absolutely a must win. Snap a four game losing streak before heading out on a tough eastern road trip.

And our supposedly best players were crap again.

How anyone could still believe in this roster is quite incredible.

Why would the Rangers trade their 1st line centre who’s been averaging over a PPG for some time for a 1st round pick and a cap dump.

And that buttom feeder has a better record than the Flames.

One more automatic loss to go against the Blues, and then the Flames may have a 50/50 chance of winning the following game.

When you know that games against playoff contenders are automatic losses, you're a lottery team.

It’s a fair point when being critical of how this team has been managed for the last 16 months. Regression, no progression - and that includes the signing of that dimwit Neal.

Simply unacceptable to be starting so slow in the majority of these games.
6 regulation wins in 24 games which tied for fourth-worst in the NHL yet with the most games played. Bleak.

You going to keep saying the same thing over and over? Please explain how Backlund is not a top 6 player when last season he was ranked 36th in even strength points among centers in the league. Is it his defense that is lacking for the top 6? Hes snakebitten at the moment like most of the team, its not lack of talent or effort.

He has one less even strength goal than both Gaudreau and Monahan this season, yet he is your target? Bizarre. Carry on then.

He’s part of the issue. Backlund’s career highs show his prime years have him as a 2nd line centre, but he got smoked defensively in the playoffs last year and he’s consistently getting destroyed this year. My argument is that he’s now post apex and can’t be counted on as a #2 centre, but rather a 3rd line centre. I’m in no way excusing anyone else’s play, and things are made worse by the fact that we also lack a top six winger. He, in his role, is playing short handed when you take into consideration the lack of forward depth.

I just don’t think Backlund can generate enough himself or finish consistently enough to keep his #2 slot on a high end team.

Good, another tap in from McDavid closer to a 3rd round pick.

lot's of talk about the flames top players, pointing at Gaudreau and Monahan. How about Giordano?? He looks terrible out there? What is he doing on the first goal exactly??

if the flames come back next year with all of the same core (Monahan, Gaudreau, Giordano, Backlund) I can finally say treliving's just a very overrated GM.
