Does anyone have pictures of the movie theatre at North Hill mall? I remember it being a super cool theatre but it was demolished when I was just a youngster.

The North Hill Sears has some serious contamination issues that might be holding things up. The Kal Tire there used to be a gas station and the tanks have leaked, with migration a 1/3 of the way down the 14th street hill.
Kresge/KMart were the same thing. The store was rebranded KMart in the 70s.
I can’t make out the writing on the map - where was the Safeway?
The one in Chinook was branded as a Kresge store until it closed, although, inside it was pretty much interchangeable with a K-Mart.
Until looking at these maps, I had forgotten that Safeway had two different locations in Chinook. It was originally one of the anchors of the expansion that was done in the mid-80s, on the east side (I think it was roughly where Shoppers is today). That location didn't last long because when Woodward's started having financial troubles, one of the first things they did was sell off their grocery operations to Safeway, so Safeway moved into the old Woodward's Food Floor at the south end of Chinook (around where Old Navy is now). The Safeway by Sears was then split into a drugstore and Consumers Distributing, which is mostly what I remember being there.

I lived across the street from Chinook in the mid-nineties and I remember the Safeway at the south end. There was also a library downstairs by the bowling alley. It was disappointing when both of those left.
Man Chinook in the nineties was sketchy as hell. I remember some random homeless guy there approaching my dad hoping he could sell him some crack. My dad, a middle aged Middle Eastern man with a mustache, walking around a mall with his two school aged boys. Not sure what gave this dude the impression that my dad was a crack dealer.
I do also remember all the epic birthday parties there at Easy Street. Those were fun times.
in 2003, Leslie Kende, president of the Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill community association, reported that gas had been detected three blocks south and two blocks west of the former site.
Here's some good details about the remediation involved:
Since this seems to have turned into our annually re-occuring Calgary nostalgia thread:
Market Mall original and first expansion
Southcentre 1974 (looks the same as today!)
A Woolco at a Calgary mall somewhere in 1975? Westbrook?
The Simpsons Sears signage at North Hill which explains why all those brick lines are there and why the Sears logo didn't fit
Chinook North and South malls?
TD Mall / Original Devonian Gardens - what an amazing childhood place with all the maze-like paths and nooks and crannies and jungle gym hidden in a dip under the second level
Problem is there's a lot of empty apartment condos right now.
Sure, but still lots of development happening too...
Of course it's a matter of who owns the land, and when they want to pull the trigger. But, from a civic point of view, a development at Sears site makes way more sense than Grace Hospital.
Seeing the Chinook Mall thread makes me think of how much I liked Woodward's as a kid. We always shopped there. Always went to $1.44 Day on Tuesday and my Mom would get me something.
Our kids always loved Devonian Gardens when they were young. I can't believe how it's turned into a bunch of meh.
Regarding development, I remember reading that Landmark was building a theatre at Market Mall earlier this year. I thought it was supposed to be where the old Staples and home store were but that is a Saks Off 5th. Where is the new theatre supposed to be?

North of it. They're constructing it right now. It's not gonna be a massive teather.
Sunridge Mall related, seems like Winners will also be moving into the mall with the current construction. So that makes two stores nearby that's moving in.
^ On a somewhat related note, any idea if/when/where we are getting Canadian Top Golfs? It was a partnership with Cineplex IIRC...
That partnership was only officially announced about two weeks ago, so it will probably still be a while. They said they want their first Canadian locations to start opening in 2019. That probably means Calgary will get one in 2020 or so.

North of the old Staples? In the parking lot by Safeway? Or north of the mall by the professional building and Bay?

Essentially where the Staples was; in that same parking lot. The former Homesense location beside the Staples is more so where Saks off 5th is going. Movie theatre is beside Saks.
Oh yeah, I forgot how they ruined the Devonian Gardens and turned it into the highly disappointing tile heavy uninspired boring wasteland that it is today.
