Pettersen with another 1G/1A game, including this OT beauty to win it for Norway...

https://twitter.com/user/status/1073944486877761537

Germany defeated France today to go undefeated and will get promoted to the main tournament next year.

Norway finishes 3rd in the D-IA and will be back next year. Pettersen is eligible to play again next year. He finishes this year's tournament with 3G/3A in 4 GP.

There's a decent article in the Herald about Pettersen and his development in Denver.
Quote:
“Obviously, we’re always looking for talent, but it’s his competitiveness and just the way he’s driven,” Treliving said of Pettersen. “I mean, you talk to those DU coaches right now, he’s an 18-year-old kid who prepares like he’s 28. He’s very serious. Driven. And ultra, ultra competitive.
“For people in Calgary, everybody remembers Mony (Sean Monahan) as this really serious guy. This kid is the same way. It’s hockey 24/7, and just a really serious approach.”

Flames can't afford to have two garbage men on the team.

Here is another positive article on Pettersen, this time by The Athletic.

Quote:
the Flames already look smart for taking a gamble of the skills of Pettersen. He almost looks like a different player. He’s still as skilled as always, but he’s playing with more speed, creativity and awareness.
Pettersen has been one of the NCAA’s best freshmen. He’s fourth among under-19 freshman scoring in the NCAA with 0.81 points per game, ahead of notable prospects like Oliver Wahlstrom, Blake McLaughlin and Ruslan Iskhakov

Very excited about Pettersen. Really think he can be a difference-maker in the future. He's crept into my top-5 prospects with Valimaki, Dube, Phillips, and... Tuulola? Parsons? Man, I'm glad the Flames kept their first pick, that group is thin.

He's actually been very productive for a freshman in a very low scoring division/conference. Even recent 1st round pick Ryan Poehling has had a hard time trying to reach the ppg mark. Perhaps he'll be another diamond in the rough in the mold of Johnny. Very similar paths so far, USHL, late pick, NCAA, strong rookie season.

One of my favourite Pettersen stats:

Johnny Gaudreau D+1 year NHLe: 32 points
Mathias Emilio Pettersen D+1 year NHLe: 31 points

Yeah, I don't know if he has the upside of Johnny or not, but he sure has some potential to become an NHLer, which is exciting.

As Scorp pointed out, so far as a NCAA Div I freshman he's 17pts in 18 games. Johnny had 44 in 44 and rapidly improved.

Not a bad start for 'our' Petersson.

That was quite a while ago. He's now at 26 points in 32 games.

He is second on the team in points, first in assists.

Does anyone have a link to his highlights that they reference in The Athletic article? Is it a YouTube package?

Was Pettersen drafted by the Flames out of Europe or NCAA? I can’t remember. Hopefully Europe so he can’t pull a Fox.

He grew up cheering for the Flames while living up in the Happiest Place on Earth™. I don't think this is much of a concern.
