I think that the match penalty has more to do with the manner in which Hathaway took Grant down, which when looking at it again looked like a MMA take down headfirst onto the ice. While spitting is a misconduct I think that the match penalty (and likely the response of the Ducks to Hathaway) had to do with the initial fight and take down.
Also, watching the Capitals play is a good reminder of just how far the Flames are from being a championship quality team. Their players are bigger, faster, work harder, and are more talented.
Flames could have easily beat the Caps in Calgary if Talbot was on his game
