I remember the first time I brought my son to my hometown. As we made our approach, “Daddy, what is that giant Pringle down there”?

A big criticism I have of Calgary is how it has lost so much of its past. I think this stems from the massive boom in the 70s accompanied by a lack of foresight.

The dome is easily the 2nd most iconic building in the city and I would love for it to remain. However, the cost of maintaining it would be ridiculous and will only go one way. I’d hate to see it going into a state of disrepair.

In this case, unless someone can come up with something truly innovative for it that makes economic sense, it should be demolished.

UNESCO world heritage site as a great architecture work of the 1980s.

Turn it into a Wild Rapids!!! The dome has previously dealt with large bodies of water.

Edit: Dammit, I've been You Need a Thneed'd, if that's a thing.

That view was ruined a long time ago. The Bow unbalanced the skyline. The Guardian towers look way out of scale because they're so close. And then there's the Scotiabank sign on the roof.

I'd love to keep it but can't think of any reasons why other than nostalgia. It wouldn't be needed

It was an interesting design in it's time but has not aged well and demolish is the only option.

The Grain Academy and Museum could always use more space.

A football stadium wouldn't fit there.

Realistically, with the plan to connect 5th Street and 17th Ave, there's not really any viable way to save the Saddledome.

Demolish, and use the space to bring Top Golf to Calgary. Yes, I know, it would only be seasonal

That raises a question I've had. Is the Grain Academy going to survive the BMO Centre renovation?

Looks like it will not. Their website says they'll be moving to Irricana in October: http://www.grainacademymuseum.com/

That's too bad that it will be leaving the city, but it's good to see it will survive. When I was a kid, my dad worked with the wife of the guy who ran the Grain Academy. I believe he built a lot of the exhibits himself.

They have locations in places like Utah, Colorado, and Minnesota that I believe are open year-round. If they do open one here (I don't think Stampede Park is the best location), I don't think it would be seasonal.

I was pretty sure one was already announced for Calgary.

ETA: Can only find announcements about Canada (through a Cineplex partnership with TG) that say Calgary is a likely location.

Oh sweet! I haven’t heard that, but I think Calgary would be a great location to have one. For those who haven’t experienced Top Golf, I’d highly recommend.
It’s a great time for those who don’t even enjoy golf and it makes for a great social environment as you can enjoy food and drinks as well. The one in Vegas even had private cabanas with pools!

I mean, its ok. Once every 2 or 3 years is about right IMO. But it gets old and boring very quickly.

I kind of like the idea of turning it into a water park but it'd probably cost to much to maintain to make it worthwhile.
