Twitter added a warning to NPR’s Twitter account on Tuesday, declaring it as “state-affiliated media,” a label that’s typically been reserved for foreign media outlets that represent the official views of the government, like Russia’s RT and China’s Xinhua.

NPR’s president and CEO John Lansing said in a statement that the company was “disturbed” to see the label, “a description that, per Twitter’s own guidelines, does not apply to NPR.”

Twitter defines “state-affiliated media” as “outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.”

“Seems accurate,” Mr Musk wrote in response to the label on NPR’s account. Except it’s not.

According to NPR, less than 1 per cent of its annual operating budget comes from grants awarded through federal agencies and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a publicly funded nonprofit organisation with a board appointed by US presidents, and with a statutory obligation to a “strict adherence to objectivity and balance in all programs or series of programs of a controversial nature.”

Twitter also stop enforcement and monitoring of Russia and Chinese disinformation outlets today. In effect, it is a full on propaganda platform at this point. Musk shows his true colors.

The thing is, previously you could use Twitter in a pretty enclaved manner thanks to a less aggressive algorithm and curated follows, but now everything's so broken/intentionally showing you garbage it's burning hot.

There will be holdouts but I see it being a large scale disinfo platform with very few sincere users by end of year. This trajectory is unsustainable.

I've been off it since the doge went up and I have more self respect as a result. Still ok to complain though because the evolution towards it being another propaganda outlet hurts us regardless of whether we're users or not.

Elon Musk shared screenshots of his private text messages with ‘Twitter Files” journalist Matt Taibbi on Monday. And they provide an interesting look into the controversy surrounding Musk’s decision to severely limit Substack links on the social media site.

The undated texts show a back-and-forth exchange between Taibbi and Musk that presumably happened after Musk decided to put warnings on all links to Substack. Taibbi worked on the so-called “Twitter Files” which documented the business decisions at Twitter before Musk bought the company in October 2022.

“You're taking down all of my Twitter Files threads because you're mad at me personally for not leaving the company where I was already employed? Really?” Taibbi asks Musk in the text exchange.

Which is funny, because prior to all this Taibbi always maintained that he didn't have easy access to Musk and all his reporting on Twitter was done totally independently. But now he's DMing back and forth with him on a moment's notice?

NPR quits Twitter after falsely being labelled as a "state affiliated" organization in line with RT, People's Daily and Sputnik. Something tells me Moscow Musk may not be the genius businessman some make him out to be.
