The only way i think we can do that is if Neal is gone without taking salary. Even than we already have slow disappearing players like Eberle and we saw how that worked in the playoffs. We need speed and intensity, someone who can create space and break through the grindyness of the playoffs. Eberle is not that as skilled as he is he often disappears for long periods too much.

Burke on 960 this morning and Boomer brought up Bobrovsky in free agency to which Burke cut him off and said Bobrovsky will not play in Canada. Said it is unfortunate that a lot of top players won't play in Canada but he's not going to be an option for the Flames.

That's alright, we'll get him when he's 45. They always come over eventually.

Realistically most Canadian teams more or less need to stay away from the bigger names in Free Agency. Use it as a tool to sign the Derick Ryan types to bolster the lower half of the roster type of move. But when it comes to the more name players, when you do find one that will play in your market, and you satisfy the player financially it's usually not a great contract. Than the player doesn't meet expectations, and than the fans and media get on the player, and the cycle repeats.

Even if he wanted to play here he's working his way into that $10M salary he wanted. Not happening.

One theory that's been out there is that Monahan & gaudreau had a falling out over the break, which is why the line fell off a cliff.

Evidence used (some anecdotal):

They weren't seen out together after the break
Purple Gatorade stopped after the break
Apparently Gaudreau deleted a bunch of photos of them of his Instagram

So maybe they won't mind being separated?

Could be over money.
I vaguely remembering rumors how a certain player on our team lead team mates into bad investments that resulted in some substantial losses.
That could be a possibility.

I don’t know about the other evidence you talked about but I don’t think this one is true, after doing a quick scroll through Johnny’s Instagram.

Can we even really rule out some sort of Freaky Friday situation where they’ve swapped bodies and are trying to come to terms with their new and unfamiliar abilities? That could definitely lead to some stress and fallout.

Haha, most players barely have a high school education. Let's be honest, if you're talking investment advice from these guys and it's resulting in substantial losses, it was eventually just going to be something else that you lost your money on. Because clearly you have terrible financial decision making.

Forgive me if this has been proposed before but what about:

TJ Brodie
Season Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM
2018-19 Calgary Flames NHL 79 9 25 34 24

$4.65M (1 season remaining)

for

Kasperi Kapanen
2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs NHL 78 20 24 44 27
RFA

Reasoning: if the Leafs are unable to re-sign Gardiner (which for his sake, I hope they they won't be), they are going to need to replace him. Marner is going to cost a fortune and Kapanen seems like a player who is might be targeted for an offer sheet. This way the Leafs can fill a position of need at a decent cap hit.

Looking at their situation on Capfriendly, I have no idea how they are going to move out salary to sign Marner. Maybe they will just have to ice an AHL defense?

Problem with this is that it doesn't really solve the Leafs' cap issues... they need to pick one of Kapanen or Johnsson to sign with roughly $4 million to spare and adding Brodie at $4 million takes away that cap space, takes away Kapanen, AND the ability to sign Johnsson.

Brodie for Kadri is far more likely IMO.

Assuming we would ever trade Monahan for a pick, would he get us any top 10 draft picks? If so would the team be adding their 1st pick + others or would we have to add?

Getting top 2 picks would likely be impossible and if we don't trade within our division (LA, Edm, Van, Ana) and Col and Buf don't need any more centres, this would likely be the trade partners:

Chicago 3rd overall
Detroit 6th overall

That depends, have we completely ruled out the freaky Friday theory yet, so are we trading Monahans body or Monahans mind?

Flames blew it in the playoffs.

Before that they were a 50 win team. They aren't trading their 24 yo 30 goal 70 point C for a high draft pick. They arent rebuilding. If they feel they need to move on from Mony it'll be some sort of hockey trade.
