My son played a casual round today with a couple of the better kids from our (not too fancy) club, and my jaw kind of dropped when I looked up their handicaps. The high school sophomore is a +3.0 and the HS senior is a +4.1!

It blows me away how good junior golfers are these days. It's also very humbling to think of how much work and effort I put in my 30s to almost be a 10 handicap. My kid is doing well, but man there is a lot of work ahead to get to where the really good kids are.

+4 in High School is extremely good. Best golfer I've ever played with is a +7 and it's incredible to watch him play. I've played with quite a few + handicap players and it is truly fascinating to see the difference between a scratch golfer and a +5 or +7. They're so good.

I’ve played with a guy who’s a plus and fascinating is exactly it. Playing with scratch golfers is pretty cool to me, as they’re just so solid and if they’re playing well, it’s neat to watch. But then seen someone who’s a plus 6-7 is something else. I played with one guy last year who was at +6.8 and he was just unreal. That was awesome.

Played sand hollow in hurricane, Utah today. Just an amazing course. Great layout and cliffs a plenty, but not gimmicky golf.

Playing wolf creek in mesquite on Sunday. Looking forward to that!

Played Shagannapi today. It was nice, aside from a brief period of snow, which I still prefer to rain anyway. Struck the ball extremely well overall, even after transitioning back to my low loft driver, so I was happy about that... and then I 3-putted basically everything because the greens were more or less bunkers with a flag in them. If your ball was wet the amount of sand they picked up on the way to the hole was seriously impressive.

Anyway, good times. Would be nice to be able to get a round in on Sunday but it looks like everything's pretty much gone everywhere.

I finally upgraded my irons this weekend and have a question. Most sets now are 5 - PW, but my old set was 3 - PW. I loved my 3 iron so keeping it along with my 4 in my bag but what are people using in place of them? Obviously by asking this I don't golf a ton!

Seems to me it's usually hybrids or high lofted woods... 7 wood has gotten more popular of late from what I've seen. My bag goes Driver / 3 wood / hybrid / hybrid / 5 iron at the moment and that seems fairly common.

Check the lofts. Manufacturers keep jacking the lofts so that today's 5 iron could have the same loft as yesterday's 3 iron easily. My old PING eye set that I play sometimes has a 51* PW, 45* 9 iron. Today's PWs are often 43* loft. But the effect has been modern 3 irons similar to old 2 irons.

Works though. "I hit this 7 iron 25 yards further than my old one!" Haha, that's because it's a 6.

Yeah, the problem is every company had to play this game, otherwise the first company to do it would look like magicians to the average golfer that doesn't check lofts. They'd make a killing off casual golfers while the other companies didn't.

I would actually buy irons from a company that just abandoned the traditional numbering scheme and printed everything with the loft on it instead. I feel like someone does this but I forget who.

Anyway. Played McCall today, very very badly. Lost 3 balls and made exactly one putt outside 8 feet all day. Couldn't get out of the sand to save my life. Course is mostly good aside from a few bunkers that are a mess, greens are bad but not unplayable. Worth the price of admission for early season. Anyone try speargrass?
