Default Keeping your phone number when moving out of country

Let's say someone was to move to another country for a while and would be cancelling their Canadian cell phone's plan. Would there be a way to cancel the provider's plan, yet keep the phone number until returning? Google Voice can store your number and do this for $20, but only for an American number.

Anyone know a way to do this in Canada?

Obviously the easy answer is to phone your provider for answers, however, about the only thing coming to mind is if you changed your plan to ‘pay as you go’ and then just don’t use the phone but have minutes. That may work?

It's not free but for me instead of cancelling I just switched to the cheapest plan my provider had at the time (~$15). Bonus was when I came back to visit I could just swap back SIMs.

Same as a family member of mine did. I think it was $10 for voice only or something.

Not an ideal solution if you're gone for a couple years, but for a short stint it could work.

I guess the other option if you want to save a couple bucks would be do something similar but port it to whatever carrier has the cheapest rate (like Freedom or something). Then port it back to whichever carrier you like when you get back.

You could port it to 7/11. It's under $50 to get a sim and basic account that keeps the minutes for a year. Add another $10 and good for another year.

Fongo is a free Canadian VOIP app/service. I believe that you can port your number over to them. I believe that ported numbers you get to keep for life, whereas the free number that they can assign you expire if you don't use them.

They do have add-ons for texting and world calling, etc. and it is ad supported, but it might do the trick for what you're looking for. I'm not sure about forwarding an that sort of thing, or about how easy it would be to port back. I believe that the CRTC regulates porting, so it should be mandated that you be allowed to.

I have a free number with them that I use very occasionally when travelling abroad and needing to make a call back to Canada for free over wifi.

Ya, I have Fongo number. I don't think it expires, I rarely use it and have had it for years, so maybe you could port it to them. It saved my skin in the UK when the hurricane was hitting Nova Scotia and I had to change my Westjet flight. Definitely worth having for international travel. Quality isn't always perfect, but good enough in a pinch.

Another vote for Fongo. I've had them since they were Dell Voice.

Yup, I ported my old home phone to Fongo until such a time we decide we might need a home phone again. I mostly did it because the number is awesome.
