Default 2018 Young Stars Classic in Penticton without the Flames or Oilers

https://www.nhl.com/canucks/news/201...ic/c-298251644

The Canucks have announced details of this year's Young Stars Classic in Penticton in September. In a break from past years, the Flames and Oilers will not be participating.

This year, it will feature the Canucks and Jets players playing two games against each other and the UofA and UBC teams playing another two games.

The Flames non-participation is likely tied to the main squad's trip to China around the same time.

With both the Flames and Oilers pulling out, I wonder if we'll see a mini-tournament in Red Deer or somewhere else in Alberta for just them?

Not only that but it always seems like there some idiot that tries to make a name for himself by jumping someone or throwing a head shot.

I'd prefer to keep the Flames away from the overwhelming stench of losa as well.

Makes sense, Flames will need to ice some pretty crappy rosters for the preseason games while the Big boys are in China.

I wonder how ticket sales will do if the flames won't have any real star players here.

Well that implies that you were planning on going to BC.

That makes you a part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor.

It was a nice holiday outside of peak season

Camping right on Skaha Lake and watching Flames hockey all day, nothing better than that

Usually run into the Flames management at some point during the weekend too

GG's hair was even better in person

Did you try doing one of those 'good boy' things where you just try and mess his hair up? I dont know what he'd do but it wouldnt be pretty.

That sucks. I am at a wedding in Penticton that weekend. Was stoked to finally watch the Flames in that tourney.

I'd like to see an Alberta based Flames-Jets-Oilers tournament. Centrium in Red Deer would be perfect.

Flames excuse is they'll be in China. Oilers excuse is they've run out of prospects.

If E=NG, no excuse is needed.

Penticton organizers came to their senses and un-invited them.

The Oilers probably wanted to keep running McDavid out there so they could still be the talk of the tournament on TSN.

But seriously, the Flames have an excuse. What's Edmonton's?

Young Stars is Sep 7-9. China is Sept 15-19. Not to mention there's a pretty damn good chance that none of the young stars would be going to China anyways.

If the Flames wanted to participate in Young stars tourney, they would be there.

I seem to remember Burke had an issue with the tourney always being in BC. He wanted to get it in Alberta every other year. I can't find anything to back it up in terms of an article or a quote. I just remember him having that stance.

Now if that has anything to do with the Flames pulling out for 2018 young stars, I don't know. But I would be surprised if their omission was China related. Canucks played in Young stars and China last year. The China excuse doesn't seem reasonable to me.

The Canucks went to China a week later than the Flames are going. Last year, the Canucks flew to China on September 17 and played their first game on the 21st.

The Flames first game is the 15th. They'll likely be flying out somewhere between the 9th and 11th. Presumably, they'll do the regular off-ice stuff like the fitness testing before they fly out, so that would be overlapping with Penticton.

Even though the players who would go to Penticton won't be going to China, a lot of the support staff like the trainers and equipment managers (not to mention the coaches and team management) would be going to both.

Doing both would make it a very tight schedule for all of those people.
