Flames Tkachuk's next contract

Is Tkachuk as important to the Flames as Draisatl is to Edmonton or more like what Ehlers is to the Jets?

Where does he ranks in the Flames hierarchy?

Gaudreau
Tkachuk
Monahan
Gio
Hamilton
Hamonic
Backlund
Valimaki

Will the Flames extend him this season to establish what sort of free cap space they have going forward? Do they really have long term cap space to sign Tavares or Stastny or JVR or Kane?

What would be a reasonable contract be? as an extension, next year as a rfa?

Would he be eligible for an offer sheet as a RFA next summer?
Is he worth 7.8 / yr and a 1st 2nd and 3rd

Gaudreau
Monahan
Hamilton
Tkachuk

That would be my hierarchy. I think people underestimate the importance of a center, which is ironic on this board since the Flames haven't had one like Monahan in so long. Quietly goes out and scores 30 goals each year.

Of course the contract depends on the amount of years, especially with UFA years involved, but I expect him to sign between the Monahan-Hamilton contracts. 6M a year seems about right.

Less than Gallagher but more than Dougie Hamilton. Also discussed here, though perhaps it's better to get away from the abhorrent punnery in the title of that thread.

Somewhere between Johnny and Monahan, 8 years.

What am I missing here? Gallagher makes 3.75M a year.

Monahan had 80 goals and 159 points after 3 seasons in the NHL while playing center, a much harder position to play. He got $6,375,000 per on a 7 year deal. ($44,625,000 total)

Tkachuk will have to score 43 goals and 62 points this upcoming season to match that and he plays the wing.

Comparing winger to winger:

Gaudreau after 2 NHL seasons before his extension:

0.89 points per game
0.33 goals per game

Tkachuk after 2 NHL seasons so far:

0.67 points per game
0.26 goals per game

Gaudreau got a 6 year $40,500,000 contract ($6,750,000 AAV)

Tkachuk won't get more than either of those two did with their 2nd contracts IMO.

Oling: I think he meant Gaudreau?

So between $5.75M and $6.75M

It is a dig at the OP who has a habit of littering the forum with nonsense.

Kind of pointless to discuss now considering next season's play will be the deciding factor on the range of contract he gets. I expect or at least hope the new coaching staff keeps him on the first PP unit and moves him or off the Backlund line or at the very least gets Frolik off that line as that alone will likely boost his offensive output.

Yeah but why would Tkachuk want to? He's probably looking at his progress (what he could do if given more PP time) and betting on himself having a big season next year.

I think it depends.

Draisaitl's contract has distorted things now, There's no question in my mind that MT is going to be seen as a more valuable player in negotiating his deal just because of his other numbers.

If he comes out and has a 30 goal 30 assist season.

The initial starting point for the Flames will be behind Mony, Johnny and Hamilton so lets say 6 million bucks, and then through a incredibly complex hockey based advanced inflation calculator.

I figure that he gets 8 years at 7 million dollars.

Give a short term dal but give him a big raise if be convinces his brother not to sign with the team that drafts him and signs with the Flames.

I see nothing wrong with a lower money & term deal that keeps him RFA. Then you can lock him up as the new franchise cap hit for an 8 year deal. I believe you can build around a guy like Tkachuk.

I think it would be tough for a lot of people to turn down a ~50M contract. A good year may see him make closer to 60M instead, which is a great reason to not to sign, but another concussion or other injury could mean risking it all.

Maybe less of a concern for Tkachuk given his family is already wealthy.

I want to see a bridge deal that takes him to, just prior, his last season as a RFA.

I can see why the Flames may want to lock him up in the case he blows up next season as well as gets some long term salary cap certainty but he's probably looking at what Draisaitl got by waiting another year as there's no way he gets that deal based on his 15/16 season.
