With the contract Smith has Brouwer needs to go the other way. Stajan is gone in a few months no need to replace him with a younger overpaid bottom 6er

Let's not give up assets for a player like this please.
This guys screams 'Troy Brouwer'. No thanks.

A signal to the departure of Backlund? Smith could be the third line center in the big picture, playing behind Monahan and Jankowski.

I hope that you are wrong.

This team's obsession with middling forwards with below average stats, but above average salary is frustrating. Especially when we have guys on the farm that can step in and do just as good of a job for cheaper and have potential to become so much more.

Let me guess, Smith is a veteran presence that's great in the locker room.

Ottawa already fleeced us with Lazar and to top it I think we've had enough of players that were liked by their former coaches !

I firmly believe that Garrioch is in the know on this and that Treliving is looking for overpaid bottom 6 players because they are familiar to one of the assistant coaches. Makes total sense.

It’s Garrioch. I won’t believe it until someone else says it

I'd take Dzingel for the bottom line. Not Smith.

I'd take Smith only if they take Brouwer, but why would they do that - even if they thought Brouwer would turn it around, that's not why they are selling.

Smith may be a stretch for that, but our rumoured interest in Turris combined with the lack of (known) negotiations with Backlund is beginning to paint a picture...

Garrioch continually reported that the Sens were trading Radek Bonk from early on in Bonk's career until he was finally traded after his 10th season with the Sens.

I think Brucey just throws stuff against the wall and sees what sticks. If he keeps at it, he'll eventually be right!

Treliving is known to be a hard worker and poking around to see who is available. I don't think him poking around on Turris and potentially Smith means anything about Backs.

Dube on the 4th line next season would be terrible for his development. Give him at least one season in the AHL to play a bunch of minutes.

Wait, the Flames can't be this stupid?

Who would want Zack Smith if Brouwer isn't going back the other way?

I would rather pay Backlund $8 million per season than even consider taking this contract on.

Overpaid bottom 6 player on a multi-year deal who's just reaching the point where he'll decline hard and leave people wondering how he even stays in the lineup, but still somehow gets primo powerplay time and looks in the top 6 because he scored 20+ goals a few years ago?

Sounds like this guy was born to wear the flaming C!

It would be terrible if we still had a bunch of plugs like Stajan and Brouwer for him to play with. But if we have a young/fast 4th line with players like Lazar/Dube/Mangiapane maybe we wouldn't cringe every time they jump over the boards.
