I think Smith is a very good goalie, and I think the team really needs his competitiveness.
But he should be palying no more than 50 games, for two reasons:
1) he's old
2) we need to keep playing Rittich and Gillies and hope one of them takes the next step.

Agreed.
Things will be greatly improved if Smith can also figure out how to goalie at the Saddledome, because he did not do that well at any point this season.

One of the most bizarre aspects of the season.

I am still haunted by the late game winning goal for SJ in the first game at the Sadlledome this season. Also those late goals by Vegas.

Treliving rolled the dice on a 35 year old starter who was having problems staying healthy. And when he went down, so did the Flames already slim chance of hockey in May.
Even if Smith had stayed healthy, I doubt it would have made much difference. The Flames missed the play-offs by 12 points and Mike Smith was garbage after the All star break anyways.
The Smith/Lack/Rittich/Gillies combo was a fail.

And then Smith & Rittich's horrific clinic on how not to goaltend in the following game vs. Tampa...

The thing I wonder about Smith is how his teammates liked when he publically called them out, then proceeded to lay a number of eggs, letting in 4+ in something like 5 of 7 games.
Just considering human nature, I wouldn’t be surprised if there may have been a little tension somewhere in there.

Smith's quality of play next year will be one of the big question marks for me. I could see him being great (albeit with a reduced workload) but I could also see a big drop off.

I fall into the camp who thinks that while smith is good he’s not great.
He’s this generations Curtis Joseph. Not as good as Brodeur or Roy or Hasek but still top 12 in the league
To me he’s a liability and if someone like holtby is available this offseason you need to do everything you can to bring him in
|
You criticize Smith for his finish and suggest Holtby? Who went months without a win to finish the season

Yeah, but what's the reason for Holtby's performance?
Certainly he hasn't forgotten how to goaltend, or lost his abilities at 28 has he?
Was he injured, or nursing an injury of some sort that would affect performance? I honestly don't know, but I would wager that if you can snag Holtby when his value might potentially be lower than it normally is, you wouldn't be one bit sorry about it.
This is a guy who has been top 5 in Vezina voting the previous three seasons, and won it two years ago. He is a prime candidate to bounce back in a big way IMO. If I was WASH I wouldn't dare trade him now.
I remember Bobrovsky's play dropping off a cliff in 2015/16, and people would say that they wouldn't want anything to do with his $7+ million contract, then he bounced back and won his 2nd Vezina the next season and won 41 games.
I would take Holtby 100 times out of 100 over Smith without a seconds hesitation.

Well Smith is free and Holtby would cost major assets...Flames biggest need is upfront.
I have no idea what happened to Holtby...just saying he was terrible down the stretch, Smith had a handful of bad games...Holtby was an .800 goaltender for the last three months. Although to be fair he has been good the last couple games.

I'd like Holtby but yeah, Flames don't have the assets to acquire a big goalie upgrade given their other needs.

This one is going to be make or break for Treliving. Maybe this trade works out and the team is better with these new players and coaches and he's looked at as a genius. It's definately possible. However if Lindholm remains pedestrian and Hanafin doesn't do an adequate job replacing Hamilton's offense it's probably time to move on to a new GM.

I’m all on board the firing train now. I still can’t believe how bad this trade is.

No, firing Hartley was going to make or break Treliving.
Then firing GG was going to make or break Treliving
Now this.
I really regret Brian Burke not being part of the organization right now.
