Even though the players who would go to Penticton won't be going to China, a lot of the support staff like the trainers and equipment managers (not to mention the coaches and team management) would be going to both.
Doing both would make it a very tight schedule for all of those people.

The logistics can work to do both. There’s another reason they’re not going.

Yeah the kids who would be playing in the Young Stars tourney wouldn't be going to China and Huska would probably coach them like he did last year. The trip has nothing to do with this. IMO

It would be incredibly tough to do the golf tournament, medicals for the China and non-China groups, AND a rookie tournament.

Would, say, Dube and Valimaki go to the tourney or to China?

No idea. 21-25 guys go to China, the rest stay behind.
Just seemed reasonable for me to think that a roster of junior/college/tryout players could be gathered for a weekend and be coached by the Heat staff.
What can I say, I'm disappointed they won't be participating this year.

I guess that could happen but if guys like Dube and Valimaki aren't in it, I'm not that interested.

looks like the young stars tournament is now toast....

The Vancouver Canucks have confirmed the Young Stars Classic will not be taking place in Penticton in 2019.
In a brief statement to Castanet, the team said they “are grateful to the city of Penticton and its fans for their support of the annual Young Stars Tournament since its start in 2010.”
“The tournament will not take place in 2019 due to a lack of participating NHL teams, however, options for future Young Stars tournaments in Penticton continue to be explored.”

it's too bad - it was fun to get out and see the prospects (and a great place to get pics!!)

I think you need 4 teams of good prospects, unfortunately with the Oilers, they were always lacking that 4th team.

I could see bringing this tournament back when Seattle gets into the league and establishes their prospect base. Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Seattle or Calgary, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Seattle could make sense.

Just because it won't be in Penticton doesn't mean it won't happen at all.
We know the Flames and Oilers have been pushing to move it around. At the very least, I'd expect them to repeat what they did this season with a couple of games against the Oilers. A 3 or 4 team tournament in Red Deer would make a lot of sense.

Pentiction is a million times better an option than Red Deer from a fan perspective. Nice arena, nice city, nice weather in september. Red Deer is a hole. Who wants to book a trip to spend a weekend vacation in that dump? At least in penticton there is a ton going on even when they're not playing games.
About the only thing going for Red Deer is you could drive up and back the same day to minimize the amount of times spent in that trash heap.

I went to a game a few years back. Really enjoyed it. It's too bad it's cancelled.

That's too bad. I've been to it every year since we drafted Monahan. Always a fun time. But I guess silver lining is, I don't have to give BC any of my money.

I actually wonder if there is any merit to that.
The Calgary Flames are a largely Oil-owned hockey team, the Oilers, well, nobody cares about them.
But I could see that the closer teams dont want to participate and other teams wouldnt want the additional travel costs.

Pentiction is better only for Vancouver fans. Nobody else. Red Deer is far better for Flames and Oilers fans.
The Flames and Oilers have it right: the tournament should have traveled throughout the region.

How is Red Deer far better? It's still 1.5 hours away. Are you going to drive 3 hours each day so you can sleep in your own bed?

kelowna to penticton and then back to kelowna is around 3 hours (mostly depending on traffic).
and yes.... i'd absolutely do a 3 hour round trip each day (and did a number of times)

Not having to take vacation time? Flights/hotel savings? If you only wanted to go to 1 or 2 games? There is lots of reasons why it would make sense for fans.
