There were plenty of posts at the time arguing that Bennett should have had an AHL stint.

If the organization has a mandate for players to play at least 150 AHL games, they are piss-poor at enforcing it.

This was a Treliving quote. And No - I'm not going to go chasing for it. Two seasons in the AHL I believe hits the 150 game mark. That is what he was generally referring to.

Considering we still have 3 more years of 32 year-old, declining Backlund at $5.3M per, I'd argue that I'd rather move him for picks and give his money to 29 year-old, still in his prime Coleman, who has 26 points in 53 playoff games and won two Stanley Cups.
Not sure how accurate NHL.com is, but they have him listed as a C, in spite of him playing the wings in TB. If he really is a C, then it just gets even better. Lindholm, Monahan, Coleman as our top three centers for the same $$ as what we're currenly paying Lindholm, Monahan, Backlund.

Considering that Treliving has never once made an NHL-calibre player play 150 AHL games, let alone 200, I'm going with his proven actions over his alleged words.

Oh, I’m sure there were some. But I also bet they were mostly not the people who claim he was mishandled by the Flames. Those people wanted him on the top line.

Tampa spent a lot of draft capital acquiring these rugged types with skill to finally win a couple of cups.
Now teams like the Flames who also didn't draft enough skilled physicality have to go and pay a premium for them on the UFA market.
It makes me like this year's draft picks a bit more in that regard. I don't know where the cut-off I would make when it comes to Coleman - 4 years? 5 million? That still seems like an overpay, and it will probably come in under what the eventual contract is likely to be. However, that's the cost of trying to fill holes on a team.
I hope that the Flames end up picking more of a variance. I was surprised at how many 'undersized' guys were in the system, and you couple that with how many guys aren't physical who are of at least average size, and you have built a fairly weak team that suddenly has holes to fill.
You absolutely need the Ferland-types and the Bennett-types in the playoffs - guys who can play that rugged game, and generate offence in a different way, and preferably that you can play in your top 6. Those guys will always end up getting paid, though they often end up to be terrible contracts in their last years as they slow down dramatically due to their injuries.
Still, grabbing Coleman makes this team better. He isn't going to replace Backlund as the 3rd C - Backlund may be on the roster in the third line centre spot, but he is hardly the third C. He plays the tough match-up minutes and does most of the heavy lifting quite well. It wouldn't make sense to get rid of Backlund for Coleman, and then hope that Lindholm, Monahan and Coleman can pick up the slack. What Backlund does is allow the other lines more freedom and opportunity to put up points. Removing Backlund makes it a bit more difficult for them. I think for as long as the Flames are trying to win a cup (and for as long as Backlund can still skate like he does), then it remains a strong fit for the Flames having Backlund in the lineup.

It is D+3 for Pellitier...
the 2018 D+3 first round picks have 6 guys with no NHL games 4 D-men and 2 forwards Only a total of 5 more have less than 20 games. Pelletier should be in line for good NHL look.

Friedman says Calgary does not have a done deal with Coleman. Many teams are interested, including Calgary. He mentioned New Jersey and Seattle as alternative destinations.

I like Coleman, but at that price and term, I'd rather give Nick Ritchie 2 years at $2,000,000 AAV.
Coleman is the better player, but that's just too much money for middle six guy.

We don't actually know what is being proposed from St Louis. We know what a bunch of fans and talking heads imagine St Louis would like to pay for Tkachuk.

4x3 for Nick Ritchie via UFA isn’t awful. He’s young, he’s big, and we have his brother.
There’s stuff to like.

Coleman doesn't play the game anything like James Neal. I don't see the comparison at all.
