Good info. Didn't realize regular condition stint was 14 days vs the 6days/3games LTI one.

Thanks

Happy that Stone has been cleared for contact.

Good news for him and the Flames.

If the young D (Valimaki/Kylington/Andersson) start getting burned in the playoffs, I could see the veterans taking over the bottom pairing.

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Fantenberg - Stone

My hunch is that Fantenberg will be in the lineup for game 1, as will Andersson.

I still think it will be Valimaki and Stone.

Re: Stone in playoff line up. The biggest weakness i've noticed with stone is his passing when under pressure from the forecheck. From what I've seen, he seems to take a while oto make a decision and seems to almost always throw the puck up the boards turning the puck over. Not sure how that translates to the tighter checking in the playoffs. I must say I do like the other aspects of his game though, his shot and defensive/ physical play have stood out in a positive way in the past. Hope he doesn't take too long to get up to speed and can give us another option.

D pairs will likely be set based on match up, but if they want to do it based on merit / regular season success you start with

Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Kylington-Andersson

Valimaki will likely play the last few games of the season (as will Stone I'd imagine) so he could slot in on that 3rd pair too, but I'd go with whats worked, at least for Game 1. Reward your players.

Andersson will definitely be in the lineup for game 1. He’s made the team, unless his play falls off a cliff he’s a regular NHLer.

With a healthy Stone and Valimaki, I'm not sure how Kylington could be in the top 6 based on recent play. He has really struggled in the last handful of games IMO.

Too bad we didn't have defensive depth like this in 2004 or 2009.

Trying to figure out where to slot guys in is a lot easier than trying to get your AHL replacements up to speed in playoff games.

How amazing is it that Mike Commodore played 20 playoff games in 2004?

Brennan Evans only 2 NHL games played came in the 2004 playoffs. I think he played 39 seconds one game.

Edit: according to hockey reference he played 6 minutes combined in the two games

Not at all amazing really considering he played 25 playoff games in 05-06 and won the cup with Carolina.

Stone 2 secondary assists +4 in a 7-5 win over Ducks AHL affiliate in his first game of his conditioning stint.

He was partnered with Valiev

The thing is, Montador and Commodore WERE our depth pairing but we were hit hard by injuries, forcing them into the lineup on a regular basis. Prior to that, it was
Regehr Leopold
Lydman Ference
Warrener Gauthier
Montador Commodore

Or something like that. That 2004 team had pretty decent defensive depth and it took every bit of it to scrape their way to the Finals.

Up front, we had guys like McAmmond and Reinprecht injured too. They played huge roles during the season too, playing on the first line at times.

Depth is essential to go all the way. It's a good sign that the 2019 Flames also has good depth. They just need their top guns to perform too. Depth is important but it can't be what carries you.

and Lombardi up front. Flames weren't as deep a team as Tampa by any stretch anyways, but 3 of our top 8 forwards in the regular season combined to play 13 playoff games (all Lombardi). Tampa was amazingly injury free in both the regular season and playoffs

sort of happened to the 86 Flames too...players were dropping like flies by the time the finals came around

you need both depth and luck to win the shiny thing

I had no idea he was still active.

News Update

stint over

https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/flam...?tid=282300716

2 assists and +7 in 3 games

Going to be interesting to see how the Flames manage the playing time for 9 d-men for the rest of the season.

It will be interesting to see where Stone fits in. He was a regular scratch even when he was healthy so I don't think he's guaranteed to be playing in game one of the playoffs but if he plays well down the stretch I would imagine they would want him in their for a physical presence alongside Andersson.
