Default Ovechkin to sit out Flames game?

You'd have to think so. He has to miss the game before or after the All Star game for sitting it out. They play the Leafs before the break which you'd have to assume is a bigger game for them.

The Leaf game makes more sense to me. It's the second night of a back-to-back where they travel from Washington to Toronto. The game against the Flames is a home game after a long break.

Ovechkin has played 17 games against the Flames and scored 10G, 13A and 23PTS.

Goals/game = 0.5882 (18th out of 30 teams he's faced)
Points/game = 1.3529 (7th out of 30 teams he's faced)

8 of his 10 goals have come on the powerplay.

Shooting pct vs Calgary = 10.1% (26th out of 30 teams)

Take home message - neutralize him on the powerplay?

I think they'll opt to play him vs Leafs game since they are in the same conference.

Flames are a Western Conference team so to me it makes more sense to miss that one.

If the caps are fighting the Leafs in the standings, I doubt he misses a game against an Eastern conference opponent. Just my thought.

Odd that he gets to choose what game to be suspended. One would think that it would only occur after the actual infraction.

I assume he has the owners blessing but I imagine the owner would prefer him to sit out a road game

I believe that Ted Leonsis once said he would concede to allowing Ovechkin to miss NHL games to play in the Olympics. I’m sure he is not especially bothered if he chooses to miss a home game in February v. an out-of-Conference opponent. Leonsis is a different cat.

The Caps just won the cup and have sold out every game so far. I doubt Ovi missing one game will change that

Agree. I know he's probably been replaced, but what if he changed his mind?

I wonder if it's a case of avoiding a suspension. For example, if he no-shows to the ASG- he gets suspended. However if he misses the game before or after, that justifies him missing- so no suspension.

It's not about sellouts, it's about the fans in attendance being pissy that their captain chose not to play in front of them that particular night. If it was a choice between a bad team and a good team, that'd be one thing, but both the Flames and Leafs are good, so home vs away becomes all the more pressing a factor.

Yeah, Ovi missing the Flames game certainly won't impact sales. The tickets I bought for the game were crazy fataing expensive! There wasn't really a cheap seat in the building.

That being said, I also missed my chance to buy directly from a Caps sales associate (no fees and way better deals usually).

The Capitals fly out to Calgary for one game, then Boston for the next.

IMO, Ovi plays the home game (fans would rightly be pissed to pay and not see Ovi) and would there be any issue with him just meeting them in Boston and extending his break a few days (and less travel)?

Both of those games v. Calgary and Boston are home games in DC.
