Ongoing Calgary and area restuarant recommendation/review thread
Hi friends,
Going to be in Calgary with the GF for Valentines Day weekend.. wanted some tips on where is a good spot to go for supper on a Saturday night.
Nothing too expensive, not looking for a $45 a plate type place, but something just above a pub would be great. Has to be downtown, us country folk done dont dare to venture too far out in this big city.
I like long walks on the beach and fishing if that helps.

I would say Cibo would be a good bet. Really cool atmosphere and great food.

District is always delicious. Entrees run from $12-$22 depending on what you want, made with local ingredients from local farms and ranches. Can be busy however, so make a res or go early.

That District looks pretty cool, similar to a pub but classed up a bit, I am a big fan of cheese platters..
Cibo also looks really neat.. ahh this is going to be tough.

I highly recommend Borgo Trattoria on 17th ave. You just get a bunch of sharing plates, so you can get as little or as much as you want and it's all extremely good food. The also have what they call a Sperlunga which basically means the chef picks 3 courses for your table at $45 per person. It's not exactly cheap, but it's definitely not expensive either.

District is very noisy. If you want something more intimate, I like Raw Bar.

This I can agree to. It's the high ceilings, and the fact that everything is wood. Raw Bar is great, but District has a couple dishes that I'm absolutely obsessed with (pork chops, PORK CHOPS, the mussels, and the Cranberry-Brie chicken burger with a beef burger substituted for the chicken).

Haven't been yet, it's on my list as the next restaurant to check. Friends have recommended it.

Japanese Italian fusion. Just across the street from Diner Deluxe on Edmonton trail. So just slightly out of downtown.

Yeah district is awesome and everything, but on a Saturday night, if you go late enough it kind turns into an extension of Amsterdam Rhino next door. So it will probably be filled with 20 year olds getting smashed before they walk into Rhino.
Actually any place that's kind of a pub in downtown (District, Wurst, National) all turn into a bit of a nightclub late enough on a Saturday. It's OK if you're going at around 5 or 6, but maybe around 8 or later, it might be too noisy and rowdy.

I think we would probably get there around 6-6:30 and be out of there before 9.. I don't mind a bit of noise as I am used to Rider fans filling all of my bars..
At least here there won't be 13 of them trying to cram into a 12 man booth, confused as hell as to why it won't work..
That Raw Bar is in our hotel, which is pretty convenient..

If you're in the Hotel Arts, there's Taste which is just around the corner from Hotel Arts.

doesnt really meet any of your criteria, but anyone else looking for a great restaurant- check out Wellington's of Calgary, which has awesome food. Only place in town with Beef Wellington as far as I know.
It will be a little pricey, but one of the best choices in my opinion for steak.

The Himalayan on 17th Ave SW, over by Westbrook Mall. Easily my new favorite spot. I never knew that Nepalese food could be so good. The place is small, and on a regular weekend night you need a reservation after 5:30. Think of it as a cross between traditional Indian and Chinese.
The place gets a 96% on Urbanspoon, and rightly so. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/15/15656...alayan-Calgary and I'd daresay there isn't a bad thing on the menu.

I would recommend Without Papers. It's like fancier pizza, but the place itself is pretty nice for dates. The pizza is really good (highly recommend the hutch and shroom pizza). It does get pretty busy on weekends, and I'm not sure if they take reservations or not. It is a bit out of downtown (inglewood) so you will probably need to drive there. It's a good place to share a couple pizzas over a bottle of wine.
Another good wine/pizza place is UNA, but their wait is usually really long, especially on weekends.
Charcut is another restaurant that is really good, and is reasonably priced. Entree's are almost always under $30, so if you stay away from appy's and drinks you can probably come out under $100 for the meal. I highly recommend the duck fat and truffle gravy poutine and the butcher's steak. The prime rib is good too if they have it that night. They also have a very good Beer menu.

Some have been mentioned, others haven't.
Model Milk, Cibo, Borgo, C lounge, Cilantro, Mercato (a bit more pricey), Taste, Raw Bar, District, UNA, Vin Room.
Those are all that come to mind and they are all around 17th Ave.

I think excessively noisy restaurants are actually a thing now. Almost all the new ones I've been to along 17th ave are deafening and impossible to have a normal conversation in. it's the modern decor with hard surfaces and ceilings, no tablecloths, etc. to absorb sound.
if one of these trendy restaurants could advertise that I'm able to eat and not yell at the person sitting 3 feet from me, I'd be all over that. as long as they served a quality pizza pie.
