With Spooner not being claimed yeah. If they bury him, they only save a portion. Using the full salary, just over 1M is saved by sending him down. Still counts for 2M and change to their cap.

I wonder if Chia didn't understand this and thinks it's still like it was under the last CBA? Did he think he could send Spooner down and activate Sekera now? Or is he so dumb he thought someone would actually claim Spooner?

I don't know if Chia has a firm understanding of the CBA. There is that buyout age thing that has been brought up recently. In light of that, he probably is hoping someone would just take him.

One of the Oilers’ writers on theAthletic has this interesting observation on cap management by the Oilers:

The Oilers treat cap room like an uncomfortable nuisance, something to be spent quickly, so as to allow management to move on to more important things. It’s a major mistake, and I do think the handling of the cap during the Chiarelli era in Edmonton is a major contributor to the failings of the regime — possibly the biggest error and probably fatal.

For these reasons, I think it’s appropriate to suggest the Oilers are behind other NHL teams when it comes to learning from cap mistakes. As it pertains to cap management, the Oilers continue to show a willingness to put themselves into a corner early and often. A reasonable observation is they have no idea what they’re doing in this area.

The one thing he is missing in all of this is the Edmonton Tax. It's ingrained in their organization and a self-inflicted wound.

Yeah the Flames have models for their cap going a few years in the future. To equate it to video games, Edmonton just seems to be stuck in single season mode rather than dynasty.
