Dune's the measuring stick for everything else.

Hyperion was ok but Ringworld and almost anything else by Niven is right up there near the top IMO, the Known Space universe is very cool, you eventually end up going back and re-reading books because of how they fit into the timeline.

I just finished reading The Martian by Andy Weir from 2011. If you have a scientific bent, you'll probably really like it. Best .99 cents I've ever spent on Kindle. It was originally written in a serial format, then compiled in a book.

How is Ender's Game as an adult reader? I've been meaning to read it since I was in about grade 5 and still haven't gotten to it!

Hitchhiker's Guide was next on my list to read too, really looking forward to that one.

I haven't finished a whole book in about 3 years. Got about halfway through World War Z and got bored. Before that was book 5 or so of the Sword of Truth, died off at about halfway again.

I just finished Ender's Game about a month ago. I couldn't put it down. Very good book. Can't wait to read the rest of that series.

I'm currently reading Rendezvous with Rama. It's a good book but I'm 1/2 way through and nothing has really happened yet. If this book ends up being a big lead up to nothing I'll be choked.

Just a suggestion, getting a 7 inch android tablet is a good bet. You can download multiple reader apps (Kindle, Kobo, etc.) which you can also have on your smartphone and computer. Plus, the tablet will let you do more on the device and will probably cost about the same as a good Kindle.

Neuromancer is only a classic because it's the first by William Gibson, which is pretty much where it's claim to fame ends. Gibson has many other books that are better as sci-fi, as entertainment and as literature.

If there's a real must-read, genre-defining Gibson-Cyberpunk, it would be the short story collection Burning Chrome. If you want to read a classic Gibson-cyberpunk novel, then read Count Zero.

(I would also say that Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties are better than Neuromancer. However they don't belong on that list because they are not genre-defining in the same sense.)

The first Dune is good. After that it drifts way too far into science fantasy and just generally becomes way too unrealistic for my tastes.

Btw, since this is a thread where someone might be interested, Louis McMaster-Bujolds Vorkosigan-books are much more interesting as scifi than they might appear at first glance. If you have a taste for not-very-far-fetched speculativ societies, I highly recommend her books.

I think she's ignored a lot because her style is generally rather light-hearted space opera, and because she is more well thought-out than far-out.

I just started into Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. Not too shabby after book 1.

Really? I guess I read off of a laptop all the time, but I thought the e-ink was some pretty sweet technology in terms of being easy on the eyes and insane battery life.

I do like the 7inch tablets though, nice weight and size for such a device.

Get a kindle/e-reader. Don't destroy your eyes with an LCD screen.

I've recently discovered the Culture series by Iain M. Banks and have really enjoyed it.
