Could look at flipping Hanifin for Debrusk+ after which would give the Flames a very deep top 9 and pushes Lucic down to the 4th line where he and Ryan and work with various prospects.

However, this gives Buffalo:
Gaudreau-Eichel-Olofsson
Hall-Staal-Skinner
With both RWs playing offhand.
ETA:
Or
Gaudreau-Eichel-Hall (wow)
Skinner-Staal-Olofsson (meh)

So we significantly downgrade our top 6 in order to add a 6th defenseman?
No thanks

Supposedly Mangiapane is as good as anyone on the team and is about to pop.
But Jokiharju isn’t an asset to be sneered at.
And Gaudreau being traded is at least 50% about getting value before he can’;t be traded at all.

Calling Jokiharju a 6th defenseman is really off the mark.
He's a 21 year old former 1st round pick that is already playing significant NHL minutes. He's almost a right shot version of Valimaki.

Steinberg seems pretty confident the Flames are still in a lot of trade discussions and still speculates it could be Monahan or Gaudreau that is moved out.

On 960, Steinberg said he believes Monahan and Gaudreau still very much in play to be traded.

Yup I’m still confident one of them is getting moved and the package will be decent but nothing exceptional.

If I were to choose one to keep, it would be Johnny. He is elite at his position, while Sean is not, but the return on Monahan ought to be significant.

I think the league has Johnny figured, unless he significantly adjusts his game. Plus, this is the last year to trade him and I doubt he re-signs.

I think the biggest issue with Johnny’s (and Sean’s) game is that they’ve been playing together too long. Monahan has transitioned into a opportunistic shooter rather than a play driving centre, and he has become over reliant on Johnny which puts a burden on Johnny during 5v5 play. If they both stay, they should be separated - but if we are to do that, I believe we’ll see Johnny thrive while Sean’s play suffers.
If Johnny won’t re-sign? Then yeah, you have to make trading him a priority. With Sean, I’m just not convinced he’s a player you build around going forward - and I guess at the end of the day, that’s why we’re hearing rumours about both of them potentially being moved.

Disagree, we have way better options to replace Gaudreau than we do with Monahan

I think Johnny’s skill set is just not in tune with the NHL game these days. Monahan’s not exciting, but scoring goals from the slot isn’t as passé as the button hook entry.
Frankly, Johnny was better when he used to go between the D. Now he tries to go around, and he can’t.

I'd say the return for either had better at least be a decent shot at someone to replace Monahan (ie: Cozens). If we're not acquiring a likely/potential #1C, then don't trade either right now.

If the Flames can turn Gaudreau into a Konecny or something I would be totally on board. I don't think either gets a center who is likely to be better than Monahan.

If Cozens isn’t involved you hang up the phone.
I’m so sick of seeing these terrible trade proposals.
Good roster player, top prospect and 1st or 2nd rd pick or keep them.

Sean plays between the dots in the OZ.
Johnny plays outside the dots in the OZ.
Tough to win in the playoffs when your most skilled player chooses to play almost exclusively on the perimeter.

If the Flames trade away Monahan that would be such an epic fail. We waited a couple decades to get a center at the level of Monahan. Just because he isn't McHobo or Mac####face doesn't mean he fills a massive need for the club. Johnny is the guy to go, for the very reason timbit suggested. If you can't play in the dirty areas you shouldn't be playing on this team. Move Johnny and profit.

Monahan stands still between the dots and lacks the footspeed or guile to slip from coverage.
Gaudreau generates space by creating movement and confusion on the perimeter.
