I didn't over exaggerate anything. That song stinks
We both know Slayer who I know you go nuts over could write the same song word for word and riff for riff and "steaming turd" is not what you would use to describe it even if you didn't care for it.
You can deny you're not part of the hater crowd all you want but your comments every time they're mentioned in something as small as doing the national anthem at a Sharks game make it obvious.
The production has that thick, wet sound, and the songs and structures have more in common with the 80s than they do with anything Metallica has put out in the last 20 years. I'm sure the old guard fans will like it and the newer-ish fans won't care anyways, it's Metallica, buy it.
At least Lars snare doesn't sound like a garbage can getting hit by a 76 Buick, gotta give them credit for that.

And even when Metallica was good, Lars held them back. Such a mediocre drummer.
Technically yes he is mediocre (when it comes to actual professional musicians...he is better than any wannabe). But pioneering and influential are words that are a better fit. Or as Portnoy has put it:
"I don't judge drummers based on their technical ability; I judge them based on the overall package and what they bring to the music they're part of. And what Lars brings to the music of METALLICA is absolutely invaluable. So I could care less if his meter might be slightly up and down, or if his fills are slightly sloppy; I don't care about that. To me, there's way more to being a good drummer than precision and technique."
Heck Lars has himself said he's not an accomplished drummer but that he is the best guy at understanding what needs to go alongside James' rhythm guitar. And he's probably correct.
Anyways the live debut of Hardwired

What's interesting about that Portnoy quote is that he epitomizes it. He's a fantastic drummer, technically advanced no doubt, but he also has a rep of being an out of this world drummer. He isn't. But I cannot think of a drummer who plays the coolest part for any song. His ear is unbelievable. Portnoy is the king of "crowd pleasing" drumming. Linear cross patterns and metric modulation are his bag, and he applies them in ways that most people can't hear to begin with.

Slayer would never put out such a mediocre cookie cutter song, so I don't have to worry about that.
And even as it stands, I don't think Slayer is untouchable. Repentless isn't awful, but it's definitely not a great album. And don't even get me started on Diabolus in Musica. What a disaster that was.

Okay good. I started reading your post about Slayer and cookie cutter and was going to bring up Diabolous but you covered you bases. I'll put in God Hates us all in that grouping too, its not terrible but it felt pretty generic after a while.
Yea, Diabolus was a bad album. I've listened to it a few times and there's nothing redeeming about it.
And there's definitely something off about God Hates Us All. I don't think the songs themselves are that bad, it's just something about the recordings. World Painted Blood suffers the same thing.

Oh my god, that new In Flames sounds fantastic. God I hope the rest of the songs are like this. I was not a huge fan of the last album, but I am liking this.
November 11th for full album.

The correct response is they all sound the same. I remember actually laughing out loud at the stretch between Disciple and Exile, because they all started with a very similar riff that had slight differences to them. Slayer gets some credit for not compromising their sound, but at the same time they still haven't made an album I'd consider very good since 1991. Christ Illusion was good but the rest were mediocre.

I had to go back and do a double check, but no one has posted anything from the best metal album of the year yet so I might as well. And I actually think this is by far the best metal album I've heard this year. Has a very Death feel to it, if Death ever went to space.

First song released was the first time in a long while you could put fantastic and in Flames in the same sentence.

Divine Intervention (1994) is one of my favourite Slayer albums though.
