Canyon’s was the best it’s ever been. Quick and dirty with minimal flair.

If I have to hear another anthem singer who wants to hold a note for a few seconds and show us the pipes every time, I’d rather we just cancel the thing all-together.
Canyon is the best it’s ever been? That’s a pretty low bar. Scan the crowd next game he sings at and you’ll see a bunch of different groups mocking his rendition. The force fed cowboy theme is nauseating.

If Lexi is available, and gets through the anthems quick that's my vote!

Heather Liscano was the best. Beautiful storing voice without all the diva singing. I appreciate Canyon's ASAP approach to singing however.

Is Tony Reno still around? An entire generation hasn't had nightmares due to him now.

Heather Liscano was a treasure.

Canyon was great as well.

I trust they will nail it again.

I don't think that's what he's saying. Sounded to me more like he hopes we don't get one of those losers that tries to put on the performance of a lifetime like some of the anthems lately in all sports.

Or the Reuben Kincaids (the whole band).

I don't think his comments were about the Calgary singers. I actually don't hear that much fake twang in Canyon's singing. It's not like he's pulling a Dwight Yoakum or anything. As for fakeness, if you hang around a particular accent enough, you often adopt it. I imagine even moreso if you are competing with other artists and that's the sound.

“Best it’s ever been” was tongue-in-cheek, because at the end of the day it’s the anthem before a hockey game, not a Celine Dion concert.

We don’t need a “powerful” singer, and going as far ranking Calgary singers or pining for the singer from the 80s is just silly to me. Make it a star... or a nobody... or a local Calgary musician... or... whatever. George was great. Heather was great. Basically anybody who knows the words, can sing, and doesn’t drag it out like everyone is there to see them is “great.” The same can’t be said for many other anthem singers around the league.

The anthem singer is about as crucial as that guy who asks trivia questions during the breaks, and has about equal impact on getting the crowd “into it.” The faster you get to the part where we all cheer and put our hats back on, the better.

As above I'm surprised that many people care much about the anthem singer. As long as the singer isn't butchering the anthems or trying to make it a personal showcase I don't particularly care who is singing it. Canyon did a fine job IMO.

Try telling that to Philly fans when Kate Smith sings God bless America. Show some pride in the product.

Well, they are all wrong. Every single one of them.

Anthems are trivial time wasters, and if anything their overperformance cheapens any supposed genuine patriotism they were intended to invoke.

Liscano was boring as hell

Canyon was at least different and sang it really fast to get it over with.

Replace it with a recording for all I care. Better yet get rid of it entirely. Its not "getting people into the game" and anyone looking bored or disinterested during the anthem is because of the anthem itself not because of who's singing it

Let's start a new trend and not bother with the Anthems before the game?

I agree but have we considered what Philly fans would think?
