Default Car shipping from Canada to US

I am considering an offer to take my Mom's older very low mileage Prius for my son. She lives on Vancouver Island, I live in Virginia. Any estimates on what this should cost or if it would be considerably cheaper to ship it to Toronto and drive up from there? Any recommended companies that do this? Anything to worry about when importing from Canada?

You'll need a transporter & customs broker. Even if it's a gift, you will be charged duty on the market value of 2.5%. I'd call the BC office of A&A to discuss the process and fees.

For transporting the car, the cheaper route would be to send the car south into Washington state and then ship it across the US. It will probably cost ~$500 to get it to WA and then another $1,000 to get it to Virginia.

How about Black Ball ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles ($70), then drive it to Seattle (2.5 hrs), then ship from there?

You will want to make sure this vehicle is eligible for import to the USA from Canada first. Contact Toyota to get a letter of compliance.

Strictly from the time, money and complexity saved from not dealing with the various shippers/brokers/customs...THIS.

Shipped my car as a temporary relocation last year and that was painful enough.

Makes sense, and I'd be all for that, but my mom doesn't really think like that. The offer is to give my son the car if it will be put to good use, otherwise she'd sell it for herself or trade it in.
