Default How to tell if a jersey is replica or authentic?

I was checking out the Seattle store just for fun and they had these comments about replica vs. authentic jerseys. Now I don't know what size of (Flames) jersey to buy, because I don't know how to tell if it's replica or authentic. I have 3 jerseys, two Reebok and 1 CCM. Is it the fight strap thing?

"Authentic jerseys are made oversized to accommodate the padding players wear on ice.

If you are looking for an oversized fit (sweatshirt and overall bigger): go with your normal apparel size

If you are looking for a regular fit (t-shirt underneath): size down one sizes from your normal apparel size

If you are looking for a tailored fit: size down two sizes - this will not tailor the waist just make the length and overall body smaller

Replica jerseys are made to be more tailored to your body since they do not try to accommodate the padding worn by players. It is recommended to wear your normal size and it will be slightly loose but still tailored to fit."

Probably a rookie question, but I'm a gal not a guy and never grew up playing.

Thanks team!

My Flames replica and Authentic fit the same. The Authentic is actually slightly more fitted, as it has a higher quality cut. I wear a medium in jerseys, and a large in regular clothes.

The "Authentics" are no longer the same jerseys the players wear. So I do not think they oversize them for equipment anymore.

Edit:

Apparently, there's a class action on this very point:

The "Authentic" jerseys are tighter and use cheaper/thinner materials than the player issued ones.

Set fire to it.

If it catches fire and burns up, it's authentic.

If it repels a flame, it's a fake.

Go on and try it, you'll see.

Or tie it around a heavy rock and throw it in a river or lake. If it floats it’s a fake!
If it sinks it’s authentic.

Really people it’s not that hard to figure out.

Currently there are two types of jerseys sold at retail:

1) “Authentic” (made in Indonesia) by Adidas

2) “Replica” by Fanatics

Number one is made to emulate what the players actually wear on the ice (they are made in Canada) but they aren’t actually the same. In terms of cut and fit, number 1 is baggy and fits looser. I understand number 2 is more fitted like a regular shirt. So the description is generally correct but I would ignore the stuff about wearing over pads etc since the player jerseys are not the same.

Note that prior to Adidas, actual game style jerseys (like the ones players wore) made by CCM/Reebok could be purchased in limited quantities at retail, whereas the regular, more widely available jerseys were sold as “replica” jerseys.

Also, the women’s replica from fanatic is tailored like a woman’s shirt. The only way to describe it is “hourglass”.

There is also some other terms to be aware of:
  • "Licensed" - authorized by the NHL to be sold as a souvenir. For example, cheaper jerseys found at Walmart. Also includes the "Authentics" & "Replicas" sold at the Flames Fan Attic stores.
  • "Knock Off"/"Fake" - black market replicas, usually from China, variety of quality, often colours are a little off, a few easily recognized characteristics if you know what to look for. Always seem to have numbers, names & a fight strap.

After reading the other posts, my replica is a bit older, and made by rebook. So the new ones may fit tighter than the one I have. Generally everything fanatics makes is garbage.

May be a fake too, if that's how it's spelled.
