Yeah, when I set out to buy another watch this Christmas, I really wanted to get a Swiss watch at first, but something about this one spoke to me when I put it on.
I saw a comment above calling this a baby Alpinist. That's not technically true. This is an homage to the original Seiko Laurel Alpinist from 1959. It has a similar aesthetic to that watch, but with modern dimensions and caliber
When this watch came out in August, I knew I had to get one.
|
Yes, it's a Sumo. I was browsing Seiko's after your post and I ran across this one....
I honestly wasn't going to buy another watch but this might tempt me.

Ah, I just saw a few comments online colloquially calling it the baby Alpinist. I didn't do any further research than that. My bad.

In the same way people turn their heads to see a classic car (even if not restored), many who appreciate watches might be excited to know the story behind an older Omega like that.

I think chrono24 is good for restored watches. For an unrestored one, I'd peruse something like ebay as well.

I was looking at getting a stainless steel band for my Tag. But I’m not all that keen on spending $800 on a band for a watch that only cost $2k.
Any suggestions for a decent quality band that’s not official Tag? All I can find are cheap $20 versions. I figured there’d be something better quality than $20 but less than $800. Not having much luck finding anything though.
There are a couple sites that sell authentic a tag bands but even those are between $400 and $600 USD. After duty and exchange they aren’t such a great deal either but might be a bit cheaper than buying local. But if I can get a decent quality band for a couple hundred, even without the stag logo, that’d be ideal. Stainless steel is stainless steel, right? I just don’t see the value in spending a ton extra for the logo.

Try Fostner bands or Uncle Seiko.
Not sure if they have bands for your specific watch but worth a try. They both do great work.

They don’t appear to have what I need but that’s exactly the type of thing I’m looking for. Thanks for the suggestion though!

My wife took a chance and bought me one of these for Christmas
https://www.fossil.com/en-ca/smartwa...ore/hybrid-hr/
I'm not a smartwatch fan, but I do dig this one. It track steps/HR/sleep/workouts but it also will give me simple notifications from my phone. I can even decline calls without pulling out my phone. But it looks for the most part like a regular watch. I'm finding it to be a compromise that works for someone who doesn't need all the whistles and bells of an Applewatch or whatever.

I was looking at this one but I don't feel the need to pull the trigger yet:

I agree that it's been neat that better watch looking activity tracker/hybrid smart watch options are popping up.

The Omega Swatch came out today. Since Calgary is such a major metropolis, they are not available here, but Swatch says they are not limited edition and will have them available everywhere in the future.
If I get a chance, I will get one just for fun. But I will definitely not pay resell prices.
What's your opinion on this?
P.S. I hope VW will make a $40,000 Lambo in the future....

Yes I went to the Chinook Swatch store to ask as well and they must have been tired of the questions. I think they are great for the price. Scalpers already putting them up for $1000-$4000 on Ebay.
I'm ready for a Swatchmaster 300M now.

I already have a 3752.50 (Speedy Hesalite / Sapphire), but I would definitely pick up the Swatchmaster Venus for my wife once they were more readily available. No way in hell would I pay what the scalpers are asking.

I can't believe the insanity over these.
I was going to go to Metrotown and pick one up but after seeing the mayhem in other cities I decided not to.
You had to camp out over night to be early enough to get one so forget that.
I'll enjoy my 1861 instead and pick one of these up for fun when they're easily available.
I do think it's fun and a cool idea though. Hopefully the supply is massive so anyone who wants one can get it.

I was thinking of making my way over to Metrotown as well, I did not think it would be this hectic for the watches.
I can't say I am a fan of the Speedmaster, I want to like it as it seems to be one a staple for collectors but I am looking forward to picking up one of these Swatch ones. I think it'll be a fun cool watch to have. I'll definitely wait for the madness to calm down haha

I think it's a great idea and they look pretty good. I'd like to see one first hand, and I'll probably pick up at least one. I just don't understand the huge release crowds around an item that isn't limited edition and is supposed to be readily available online in a few weeks. And who on earth would pay the secondary prices we're seeing listed?

I saw the display box at Metrotown but you couldn't touch them.
In person, they did look pretty cheap and toy like. But that's what they are I guess.

Maybe they shouldn't have made the cases out of ... pool hall chalk?
Apparently this has happened to more than one owner. And after looking at some of the Reddit /r/Watches pictures and some of the close-ups, I'm starting to rethink buying one for my wife, I've seen better finishing on cheaper Seikos.
