The only problem I have with Motley Fool is Yahoo Finance's love affair with it. Which means that if I check the day's status of my stocks on that site, all of the articles end up being Motley Fool... and about stocks I already have. Yes, I'm aware that they love CIBC. That doesn't benefit me at all.

Motley Fool is good for stock ideas, and the merits behind those ideas. Their articles need to be taken with a grain of salt though, they are pretty click baity.
If a relative newbie started acting on all of their advice they would be getting themselves into trouble.
I have no idea how many people they have working for them but its impressive/annoying the volume of content they pump out from day to day.

Seeking Alpha is way better than Motley Fool imo. Same idea, but better content and less spammy

I have a 100-lot position of a smaller dividend-paying Canadian financial institution already, and will start adding 100-lots of the bigger players as I build up capital in my margin account. Problem is a 100-lot of a bank stock trading at $107 is $10.7k, so it takes a while for new investors or those with smaller accounts to get to that level. Commissions being what they are for most Canadian brokers, even for Questrade, it adds up if you keep adding to your position through smaller acquisitions.
I have the following on my radar once I hit my capital targets for the account:
CM.TO (CIBC) - 5.32% quarterly dividend
BCE.TO (Bell Communications) - 5.31% quarterly dividend
FTS.TO (Fortis) - 3.55% quarterly dividend
A good mix of industries, and a healthy dividend to reduce my cost basis and generate some quarterly income that I don't need to keep an eye on like I do with my options trading.
|
I've been looking into dividend stocks and I have a potentially stupid question on how dividends are represented. When you say 5.32% quarterly dividend, is this 5.32% per quarter, or 5.32% annually which is paid out per quarter?

No, it's annually. Some pay monthly, some pay quarterly and it just depends on what you're invested in. But regardless, the yield is shown as an annual percentage of the current price (if the price changes it might not be 5.32% any longer).

Thanks, I figured 5.32% per quarter was too good to be true.

Yeah sorry, I worded that awkwardly, my bad. Dividend percentage is annual, paid quarterly.

I need some QuestTrade advice.
I've been placing limit orders that don't get filled. Typically, I place my orders at the previous day's low. Nothing I tried this week got filled.
Am I doing it wrong? Am I being a cheapskate?
Helop!!!!!

Maybe the price of the stock you're interested in has been consistently rising so the bid/ask range never gets back to your limit?

When do your orders expire? The default is "GTD" meaning good til the end of that trading day. Unless you change that, each order would have only been valid for that particular day

Did the price trade at or below your limit price the next day? If not, there is no reason to expect you to get filled.
If it did, the high frequency trading firm/market maker Questrade sold your order to probably didn't see enough profit in it to execute it.

I'm asking because I've had my account for exactly one month.
I have been putting in a daily limit order at the bid price. I've only executed 5 trades since I moved over from TD.
Should I put them in a few cents higher than the bid price or???
I'm definitely a noob at this so am looking for some guidance.

For big caps and liquid stocks, I would try the current bid price. If it doesn't fill after a few minutes, increment 1c.

Depends on what you're buying and how many. But really, saving $0.01 on 100 shares isn't a concern unless you're day trading in my opinion. For stocks with enormous volume that you're planning on holding for years, just go in at market.
