Sounds like the fog was quite heavy and some helo flights were grounded. That being said, low morning cloud is typical for the coastal parts of LA so I am not sure it was more then usual.

Basketball in general is wildly popular in the Philippines. They have the record for longest basketball game ever played. If the Philipinos are playing at Repsol, forget it. You'll never get a hoop.

Do helicopters have black boxes?
Air Traffic Control states they are "too low for flight following", which is a form of air traffic information that can be provided to general aviation aircraft. That statement from ATC in no way is telling the helicopter that it is too low in altitude.

Yeah, I work with 2 Filipino guys and they are basketball crazy.

I am not really a huge basketball fan, but I do find it incredibly sad. As someone else mentioned, it wasn't like some playboy gallivanting around in decadence. Which still would have been sad of course, but this was daddy daughter quality time that ended in tragedy.

I have to admit, if I had a networth of $600,000,000, I would probably take a helicopter anywhere I could.

Say what you want about Kobe, but you can tell he loved his children more than anything.

A description of the conditions the pilot was dealing with and a partial sequence of events leading up to the crash.

LA traffic is as bad as all the stories. If money was no object, I would commute in a chopper too. I don't fault him at all.

I heard Celine Dion would commute in a chopper from Henderson to the casino to do her nightly show.

This guy was a mega star. Probably only surpassed in popularity by a handful of athletes like Becks, Ronaldo and Messi.

Still a long ways to go until we know what happened but this is a bit unsettling-

"Still, he can’t help but be haunted by the idea that if Bryant’s pilot had decided to fly IFR, he and his passengers would still be alive."

I'd be surprised if it did, just like most small aircraft do not carry one. But they have good audio and decent radar coverage. That plus the wreckage analysis will likely lead to a conclusion of what happened. My speculation only but it they were Special VFR the weather will be a major factor. And if they were too low for ATC to see them for flight following then I'd wager CFIT right now as the primary cause . Controlled flight into terrain.

Whelp.

Eighteen seconds after beginning the turn, the helicopter had lost 800 feet and returned to an easterly heading. But what the pilot had failed to reckon with is that the ground rose not only straight ahead, but on the sides as well. The S-76B had impacted a hillside above the Los Virgenes Municipal Water District facility at a speed of 170 mph.

Even though we're all short as ####, we love basketball. It's super popular over there and many people look at NBA players as heroes.

Self-driving cars get all the attention, but how many small aircraft accidents will be avoided once planes and helicopters become self flying? You hear about Cessna's and helicopters crashing quite frequently, and almost always the cause is some kind of pilot error

Work today looked like a Laker's game, tons of people wearing Kobe jerseys. So Cal is pretty subdued today

Celebrity/fame is a funny aspect of our culture.

Everything about Kobe Bryant and his daughter because he happened to excel at basketball. "Tonight is for Kobe" was the mantra of the Grammys.

I appreciate its early and for privacy reasons there has not been much coverage of the others who died, but their lives are reduced to footnotes in this tragedy.
