Travel Advice - Jamaica

I know a guy and a girl that went to Jamaica and stayed for a few months. They were involved in some kind of development project.

From what they told me, Jamaica is an awesome place if you are a white woman, but a horrible place if you are a white man. Of course, they were not isolated in the tourist areas, so their experience was different than what most tourists would experience.

Bring your own mug, Thankfully the wedding party thought of giving everyone these awesome cups. If not you're carrying around little tiny cups everywhere and refilling at a ungodly pace.

Plus keeps the sand and whatnot out of your cup.

Best advice is just to relax and enjoy yourself.

Any advice on which resort to go to in Montego Bay? I can't decide between Secrets, Iberostar, and Hyatt Ziva Rose.

And any idea on tipping in Jamaica at resorts? Should I take Jamaican or American dollars?

American dollars seem to be the hot commodity for tipping or general usage.

Sunset beach resort & spa was great, IIRC Secrets was pretty close. The sunsets are gorgeous - be sure to grab your camera!

Stayed at the Hyatt Ziva Rose and it was excellent. I would definitely recommend it. I've stayed at an Iberostar before but it was in Cuba so I can't compare but if I had to choose I'd take a Hyatt over an Iberostar for sure.

USD dollars are fine for tipping.

I think it's just a place to grab a drink and relax a bit after your flight. Like the air canada lounges.

I'm heading to Runaway Bay for a wedding in November. Pretty excited as Jamaica has been somewhere I have wanted to visit.

I have been before on a Cruise when I was young but I don't remember anything but climbing that one waterfall.

I've stayed at that Hyatt and would definitely return.

Looking at going to Runaway Bay, Jewel Family Resort with the waterpark at the end of November beginning of December. Anybody ever been there? Any other suggestions what to do with kids off resort?. Thanks
