Another band from the 90s are reuniting to release a new album. This is seriously getting weird. This time it's Bis from Glasgow. I got into them because I had read their band name was based on lyrics from the The. I thought Bis' frenzied first album was pretty good back in the day but what would get me really excited is if Urusei Yatsura were to reunite. Anybody remember them? At this point, such an event is completely probable.

I got the new Pom Poko album a couple weeks ago and it is solid.

Yeah when I first heard of the concept and saw the pictures of him in cowboy gear I was a bit confused, but I’ve learned to never doubt Springsteen. He could put out a dubstep album and it would probably be amazing.

Honestly country music can be phenomenal if done correctly. Unfortunately all the cookie cutter pop-country garbage that appeals to frat boys, party girls, and people who have had lobotomies is dominating the airwaves right now which is really giving country a horrible reputation.

The oddest trend was Japancakes, Japanther, Japandroids. There are probably others as well.

Springsteen has always had a folky/country side to him (Nebraska, Ghost of Tom Joad, Devils & Dust). This new record sounds like it might be a natural extension of those earlier albums.

And yea, the pop-country stuff dominating radio these days is pure garbage. If you want to listen to some real, honest to god country music, you have to look outside the mainstream to the Americana/alt-country genre, which is absolutely thriving right now. Just a few excellent albums off the top of my head for anyone who is interested in checking them out. Most of these are fairly recent:

Son Volt- Union
American Aquarium- Things Change
Sarah Shook & the Disarmers- Years
Jason Isbell- The Nashville Sound
Jeff Tweedy- Warm
Amanda Shires- To the Sunset
Chris Stapleton- From a Room, Vol. 1 and 2
Erika Wennerstrom- Sweet Unknown

What about all those bands with "Super" in their names during the 90s?

Superchunk
Superdrag
Super Furry Animals
Supersuckers
Superstar
Supergrass
Superconductor
Super Deluxe

Yeah, that's another good example of bands being less than creative, but "super" is a normal prefix and "Japan" isn't so it's weird that multiple bands went with it.

This isn't a new record but it was just reissued and made available commercially for the first time. It was originally commissioned by Scion as a giveaway. Weird, right? Anyway, it's typical Reigning Sound, soulful garage rock.

Bought the new Cranberries album yesterday, and it's pretty great. Such a treat to hear Delores' voice one more time.

The new ep from Jetty Bones reminds me of a lost Rilo Kiley or Jenny Lewis record. Not to be confused with Jetty Boys, another band from the US midwest.

This band and The Chats always make me want to pull out my old Dead Milkmen records. New album in May.

The Mystery Lights (along with Michael Rault) represent the new sounds from Daptone records since the deaths of Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley. New album later this month.

Saw them in a small venue in DC this past summer. They put on a fun show.
