So Gus is an older Quinn Hughes...
Where was the 1st rounder the Leafs got for Barrie?

That's an exciting one timer option to add to the power play. I know a lot of emphasis is made on getting a right handed shot but I don't think we have anybody on the team that can do what Gustafsson does as a LH on the right side.

Did anyone else think "who's that" upon first hearing about this trade? The guy was 6th in scoring amongst d-men last year for cripe's sake. He's back to being middle of the pack in points by a D now, but still...

If you want to delude yourself, sure. He'll never be as short as Quinn.
The first was ready to go, no one wanted to toss in a top prospect as well

Gustafsson would be second on the Flames in points from the blueline, and was leading the Blackhawks. While no where near the 60 point mark he's on pace for 35. Would love for him to become a fixture on the first PP. Giordano hasn't been great, perhaps he's the spark the first unit needs.

Wow. Just watched the video of his goals from last year. That’s one heck of a shot, especially the one-timer. Haven’t had one of those since Iggy?
I’m curious if they try him on PP1 considering Johnny is the primary puck carrier. Let him rotate over to the right side with Johnny feeding from the left.

They have to try it, Gio hasn’t looked right there all season.

Really interesting move for Treliving. Seems like he’s going for something very specific by acquiring Gustafsson. Probably a move to improve the power play. He has a bomb from the point, excellent offensive instincts and make plays from nothing.
Ward will probably need to shelter him quite a bit though because he doesn’t appear to be a very fluid skater and his defensive game isn’t anything special. That shot of his should make the powerplay more dangerous though. Hard, accurate and even has a one timer.

Weird, the comments on the Athletic articles are mostly about how Stan blew it and got schooled on this deal. Very few are happy to see Gustafsson go for so little return. Also, why so trolly this year Blaster? What happened to our buddy Blaster?

I wonder if Tre is preparing for one of Hami or Brodie leaving in the off season.

I’d say Forbert is more like Hamonic than Gustafsson is like Brodie. But of course, you don’t have to set your D the same way all the time.

He saw his playoff hopes go up in smoke today.

Think Gustafsson is a UFA after this season as well. Based on what I’ve seen, I don’t think he can play a top 4 role with this team. He seems more like a bottom pairing PP quarterback if anything.
His skating seems pretty average and he looks more like a 4th forward at times out there. Not the prototypical skate like the wind Dman that Treliving covets.
But I haven’t been too impressed with the team’s PP quarterbacks all season long so I think this move will help rectify that weakness. At the very least, his point shot should become a dangerous threat that keeps defenders honest and his playmaking ability could really open up the flanks for more opportunities.

Canuck fans are the worst when they go into snob mode.
Pretty unnecessary by blaster on what's supposed to be a fun day where fans want to enjoy and hype up their teams moves.

Anton Babchuk got 35 points as a 26 year old defenseman on the Flames. Pure PP specialist. It should be noted that despite his defensive liabilities, Babchuk led the 2010-2011 Flames in +/-. He was properly sheltered.
Gustafsson likely has a higher ceiling, with more dimensions to his game. He relies on things other than his shot.

So apologies if this has already been discussed but people are calling Gustafsson a PP specialist. The Hawks have the worst PP in the league. I don’t watch enough of their games to say it’s his fault, but they have a lot of talent. Is there evidence he is good at quarterbacking a PP? I get that he put up a lot of points last year but if it was last year, we wouldn’t need the PP help.
