Default CP Game of the DECADE - 2010's - Draw complete

Draw is done!

And the winner is......

Spoiler!

Since you're a lowly PS4 user and can't digitally gift games, just pm your address and I'll have Amazon drop it off. Yes, I am that lazy.

Everyone else, based on this thread I still urge you to go out and buy the game, I know I'll be giving it another chance in the near future as well

In the interest of transparency, here's a recording of me doing the draw. Very simple, assigned each of you a number, and used a random number generator

Complete voting

Here are your top games of the decade as chosen by CP

Anyone that hasn't had the chance to play it, indicate so in this thread and in one week I'll do a draw, the winner will receive a free copy of The Witcher 3 for their chosen platform!

It's The Last of Us, close the thread, any other selection is wrong.

I'm serious. There have been some great games this decade, but they're all just more video games, even if they're incredibly entertaining and well made and in some way outstanding or innovative. TLOU is the only game so far that has elevated the medium into a storytelling vehicle that can rival other similar visual art forms. The game is about the characters in the game, and uses the medium to bring you closer to those characters. Until someone else makes a video game that's actually character driven, there's no competition and differing opinions are as objectively wrong as arguing that, say, Age of Ultron is a better movie than The Godfather.

Filling out the list was even harder than I thought. A lot of games that got incredible reviews, I couldn't really get into. So some of my list might make you go 'huh?' but looking over the games I actually put the most hours into a few weeks ago, made me realize some of the big blockbusters aren't always my favs

1: The Last of Us - I think Corsi summed that up nicely. More than a game, it's an experience. It's about the adventure, the journey, and most importantly, the characters. The fact that the actual gameplay is fantastic is just a bonus

2: Grand Theft Auto V - Another simple choice, still play it to this day and was one of the rare games that I'd think about at work that I couldn't wait to get home to play. Rockstar doesn't just create a game, they create a fantastic parody world of modern america. Plus carjacking a supercar and running from the cops never gets old.

3: XCOM 2 - Just a blast, huge replayability with the different characters plus the expansion. Always a gut punch when you lose a character you've been keeping safe and training for hours

4: Squad - Probably the best FPS I've played since BF2. The way it implements teamwork and a game where the battlefield feels much bigger than yourself is something that nobody else does. Canadian developer to boot.

5: DCS World - Probably a little boring for most people, but this is a masterful combat flight sim. My biggest off the board pick for sure. Wasn't sure I'd really vote for this but given the time I've dumped into it, I simply can't ignore it. My most played game on steam. The detail and realism taken to model certain planes is amazing, the steep learning curve is what keeps bringing me back as I spend hours and hours reading manuals just to try and figure out how to use the F-18 rader. A game you really feel like you accomplished something when you think you've mastered a plane, and a huge feeling of pride when you complete a tough mission. The game doesn't hold your hand at all. Game still has some huge things planned for the future as well

Honourable Mentions: Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted 4, Civilization V, Company of Heroes 2, Mafia II, Mass Effect 2

The Godfather vs Age of Ultron isn't really a great comparison, I was just trying to capture the difference between film as a really fun, enjoyable, entertaining and well made romp that has broad appeal (and that some people might actually prefer to sitting and watching The Godfather) to film as an art medium.

A better comparison might be if you picture a world where all of the comic books ever published have been the usual serialized pulp-paper superhero comics that were popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There were varying degrees of quality still - a series like the Phoenix / Dark Phoenix saga is still remembered fondly even now, for example. But then someone comes along and writes Maus, and it just takes the medium to somewhere it's never been before.

That's what Last of Us does, and that's why there isn't really an argument for saying "but I prefer games that X". That's fine, whatever floats your boat, but one thing is just not comparable to the other, and if we're trying to critically compare these products, well, one is just in a different league. That's not to say it can't be topped, because the acting could be better, or someone could tell a better story, but it just hasn't been done so far.

Just for example, take the farmhouse scene (which I use as an example both because it's well done and easy to explain). The plot at this point - and for most of the game, really - is that Joel and Ellie have to get to the Fireflies' lab out west and how they should go about that. But that's barely even on the radar, because what's important is that Joel is trying to unload Ellie onto his brother Tommy to take her instead, because he's starting to care about her and he's being motivated by fear of allowing himself to care and losing another loved one, and guilt, because he thinks that if he cares about Ellie, he's somehow betraying the memory of his daughter. Those motivations clash with Ellie's fear that she's being isolated and abandoned yet again, and believable, understandable conflict results, and boom, you get this scene.

The entire scenario is about who those characters are and how they're growing as people and interacting with each other, rather than what happens to them or the particular challenge that's being put before the player, whereas in any other video game - even great ones - things happen to the characters and then there is gameplay where you take control of the characters and attempt to overcome the things that are happening to them, and that's basically what's driving the whole narrative.

If anyone hasn't seen this, they should.

Very easily Last of Us, first one that came to mind even before I opened this thread. Unfortunately I haven't played a huge volume of games, so my top 5 will probably not be very close to everyone else's, but here's mine:

1) Last of Us
2) Europa Universalis 4
3) Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4) Batman: Arkham Knight
5) God of War

1. Rocket League - Endlessly replayable, super high skill cap. Best game for recreating the feeling of playing a team sport.
2. Hearthstone - Love the convenience of card game I can play on my phone.
3. Skyrim - Most immersive gaming experience I've ever had. This game constantly surprised and amazed me with all the craziness it throws at you.
4. Divinity: Original Sin - Best strategy game I've ever played, but gets knocked down the list for having a relatively easy final 25% of the game and lame story
5. NHL: never got tired of online play.

My personal top 3 are

1- GTA V standard setter as always, never ending online mode. I stopped looking at hours logged a long time ago
2- NHL but more specifically EASHL - most realistic mode in all of sports games
3- Rocket League - Best game you've never heard of
EDIT
4- South Park Stick of Truth - Nothing crazy in terms of game play but the attention to detail is amazing for any super fan of the show to experience

after that I can't say I try enough new games to put anything in a top 5 spot that wouldn't be beat by something I know to be good that I haven't played yet.

Honourable mention goes to Fortnite...purely due to how much it ruled the world at its peak and brought together hardcore and casual gamers

My standings will be a little weird because I did not own a new gen console for the better part of the decade.

GTA V
Rocket League
Dragon's Crown
Minecraft
Fortnite (while the game is unplayable now, there was a point in time where it was endless fun to play with all your friends across platforms).

Shout out to Marvel's Spider-Man, Darkest Dungeon, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Sekiro Shadows Die Twice.

I don't get to play many video games but The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption and Breath of the Wild are my three faves and are all extraordinary. If all games were that good I'd be forced to become a professional gamer.

I'm over gta games. Vice City was the last one I was obsessed with but San Andreas was amazing too. I wonder if they can make the next one feel fresh somehow?

edit- I forgot to mention the first Walking Dead telltale game. That had a damn great story and atmosphere. I'd add that to honorable mentions.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Spec Ops: The Line.
Cities: Skylines. Mental porn.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Not even sure I like it, but it will definitely stick with me for a long time. It's really something.
Life Is Strange. I'm a little surprised this is here, but honestly, it's a game I keep thinking about years after playing it. That says a lot.

Honorary mentions, in no particular order
Minecraft, just from watching my daughter play it.
Papers, Please.
Splatoon. Highly underrated IMO, such a good twist on an otherwise tired genre.
Witcher 2. It's really good too.
Mass Effect 3.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Doom. So effing fun.
Crusader Kings 2. It's kind of mindblowing to realize you've played for three hours and realize the game has been on pause the whole time, as you've just been making plans and thinking.
