This also looks good on the organization for future bubble Free agents. Shows that the organization cares about the people. they probably could’ve buried him in the press box.

He is our number 8 or 9 (honestly maybe 10) when our blue line is healthy
Where he slotted on LA is irrelevant because it’s a different depth chart. Hainsey is number two on the Senators but that doesn’t make him a top pairing guy. Just like Forbort playing poorly on a bad blue line doesn’t make him an NHL defenseman

Yep, that’s a good reason. I can understand this move now, glad Tre gave that explanation.

Really depends on what was discussed by the GMs.

Remember Tom McCollum being dealt to the Red Wings for a 2018 seventh rounder? Looks like it was never cashed in. (Dmitry Zavgorodniy was Calgary's own pick in that round).

Flames' depth on D:
Giordano
Brodie
Hanifin
Andersson
Hamonic
Valimaki
Kylington
Stone
Yelesin
Davidson
IMO, Forbort is most similar to Hamonic. He is not similar to Davidson.

Just seems weird to me. I'm picturing Treliving calling up SJ a year from now to decide on what the terms are and it seems SJ would just offer up their least valued asset, because they've already got the player and I can't imagine the NHL would overturn a trade a year later if they can't come to an agreement?
I guess it probably only works with players that really have no value at all, but still I wonder about these things.
|
Technically "future considerations" doesn't actually exist anymore the league knows what it is, now when it is used it is pretty much always a conditional 7th round pick where the conditions are unlikely to be met.

We acquired another defenseman today too you realize? With everyone healthy, I believe Forbort is #8 on the depth chart.
Since BT implying Valimaki not coming back this year, not really fair to count him so I guess Forbort is #7.

Thanks for the tip. I was putting up the depth chart prior to the moves.
I know we paid a 3rd for Gustafsson and a 4th for Forbort, but IMO, Forbort is the more complete player.
I would put both of them ahead of Valimaki and Kylington, simply due to age and experience, slotting both of them in after Hamonic. Obviously, the kids have more upside, and I fully expect Valimaki to become a stud. But he isn't there yet.
And the fact that you are suggesting 8th says a lot more about the Flames' depth than it does about the quality of Forbort. He is an every day NHLer, very much like Hamonic. Valimaki is knocking on the door of being an everyday NHLer, and so is Kylington (though he hasn't quite been able to get there yet).
That makes 8 NHL defensemen, which is a good thing. But calling Forbort an 8-9 is not at all reflective of who he is.

Besides his place on that depth chart is pretty irrelevant if Valimaki isn't going to be back and Hamonic misses a month. That 7/8 turns into 5/6 real quick. I'd rather Forbert there than Stone or Davidson

The question is how important is your #7 defenseman. It’s good to have an above average guy in that spot but as we saw last year, and every year, the top players decide a playoff series.
We are back to the argument of how great and deep the Flames D is. I hope to see them playing like it.

You're pretty much guaranteed that with any kind of playoff run, your #7 D will end up slotting as #5 when all is said and done.

What does that mean? That your #7 will end up playing a few games if you go to the finals? Sure, almost guaranteed to be true. But that’s not the guy who will get you there IMO.

I would anticipate losing a defenceman every two rounds or so. Even if you make the 2nd round, there's a pretty good chance that your #7 will be promoted to your top 6 for at least a few games. I feel that the delta between two teams' talent levels is more important than simply who is the most skilled. If you're playing Stone and Davidson, they'll make Cassian look like McDavid, because they're not NHL-calibre D at this point in their careers. Kylington and Yelesin have potential, but they're not full-time NHLers yet, and would be badly exposed in the playoffs.

I see that and I raise you the 2017 playoffs. Matt Bartkowski was a team-leading minus-5 despite a team-lowest 12:45 in average icetime. He basically acted as a handicap upon the likes of Giordano/Brodie/Hamilton. A lot of these were one goal games, too. We probably don't get swept if we had someone NHL-caliber in that role. Maybe even push it to a winner-takes-all seventh game even with Elliott's disasterous play.
Of course, if Treliving had just.. not acquired him and we kept Kulak in that role, or if Gulutzan had any idea how to run a bench, maybe that doesn't happen, but it's still a good case study in how your worst player can lose you a series.

No I remember it well. Just questioning whether you need to be going for rentals on the blue line to go 8 deep when you have bigger holes that are likely to preclude you from going far.

If Yelesin and Davidson are in the lineup, you don't have o worry about going far.
