How often does the odds-on favourite at the start of the season actually win the Stanley Cup?

It's really hard to understand why anyone would want to pump their tires.
I think the fact that Oiler fans need to disperse to various message boards to spread the message that they are "good" shows just how much they know the team has botched having superstars air-dropped into its lap through unmitigated suckage.

When you're good you don't need to convince anybody. In fact, you don't really need to say anything at all. The on ice success speaks for itself.

But they know they're overrated so here they are saying stuff.

There is never an odds-on favourite at the start of the season. ‘Odds-on’ means a better than 50-50 chance, or in modern betting terms, the odds number has a minus instead of a plus.

Most of the Vegas books have Edmonton at +800 to +850. Keeping in mind that the vig in sports betting runs around 10 percent, that means the market is giving the Oilers about one chance in nine or 10 of winning the Cup.

You think betting companies who have invested hundreds of millions/billions across the industry for algorithms to set these lines are stupid? They have some of the most intelligent quants.

There's a reason they are the betting favorites and it's not because "Oilers fans" are betting down the line and there's a reason why they're projected to win 50+ games this season.

Whether they do or not, that's why the game is played. But to come out and say they are a top 10 team at best is just lying to yourselves. They're a top contender and it is what it is.
New Jersey was a favorite last year to win the cup over pretty much every team and they missed the playoffs.

These odds mean absolutely nothing except that Oiler fans are degenerate gamblers and they have to adjust odds accordingly.

For all the oiler fans trolling here, you seem to be forgetting some important things

The team is worse, older and more fatigued going into this year as compared to last

Last year’s round one opponent was possibly the weakest playoff opponent in the batch

Last years round three playoff had beaten the previous 2 Stanley cup champions to get to the conference final

The finals opponent was inexperienced and started celebrating too soon. But they woke up and dominated the greatest players in the game in game seven

And round two
Almost Lost to a fourth string goalie, McDavid sliced Hughes face in front of a ref and didn’t receive a penalty and remained in the game to score a huge goal.
Plus
A play that resulted in a suspension and fine for Vancouver, included a McDavid two hander and a Hyman cross check to the face that went completely unpunished.

These truths cannot be ignored

Horseshoes galore

And
They are worse this year

They easily deserved to lose 6 or even more of those games. if they went 10-6 in those games like they deserved to be, they are fighting until the last days of the season to even make they playoffs, but might have even given up on trying already.
This is really important to acknowledge when using an If we take out the terrible start ….. type arguments.

If you are trimming the worst section you really should be trimming an equal length of best sections.

Yup. Standard statistical procedure: If you're going to throw out the outliers, throw them out at both ends.

You're getting triggered by a Flames fan.

The only difference between you and I is that I don't feel the need to berate and consume my life with such a skewed opinion of a sports team - even if they're the rivals.

Rivals you say? What rivals? They're competing for the Cup while we're chasing a #1 draft pick so we can have our own McDavid. There is no rivalry where there is no competition. A rivalry is only valid if there's two equal dogs in the fight otherwise it's pointless exercise of just hating on the better team.

Remember back to 2010-2015 Oilers? What was the Flames record against them during that period? It wasn't even close. We trashed them.

Life goes full circle. We have to hold out hope that some other team in the league will do the job for us by knocking them out.

Uhhhh.........no. That's not how it works at all.

Doesn't matter if the Flames are trash, or elite or both teams are equal. Don't care if the Flames are the worst team in the league next season, I still hope the Oilers lose every single game they play.

Forever.

Yup. Their best chance was last season, and the so-called "two best players in the game" were both complete no-shows in game 7 like the perennial losers that they are.

They're obviously still a playoff team and yes, they might have a shot again this year. But the odds of everything just falling into place again for them like they did in last year's playoffs are very, very slim. Making the finals in back to back seasons is incredibly difficult. Sure, Tampa and Florida have both done it in recent years, but those teams were stacked from top to bottom and were much more well-rounded with strong D and goaltending as well as elite offence. This current Oilers roster is sorely lacking in two of those things.

You can't put enough window dressing to get around the fact that they're old.

It means that returns are likely to diminish beyond the short term, and a number of players down the line up are in that age range where regression is typically expected.

Once the regression becomes evident, that can be a long and painful death, especially if you're locked into several big contracts long term.

Right now it looks great and every one in their ketchup stained sweatpants is doing cartwheels, but it's unlikely to be sunshine and rainbows beyond a couple of seasons.

Oilers are strictly a "now" team. And yet, I have a hard time seeing the seas part again for them to return to the SCF and get another kick at the can. At least not back to back.

I love this rhetoric now that Oilers have a few seasons as the better team lol. Where was all this bs when they were perennial garbage.

All this plus a PK performance that won't ever get repeated. And with pretty decent odds that Skinner goes back to being a sieve.

But let them enjoy paying 50 mill to 3-4 players and wonder why they could never build a cup winning team.

Probably going to go through exactly what happened under Bowman with the Hawks after raises were given out to the top players, except without the 3 cups already under their belts to pacify them.

It's already been hard to fit competitive depth under the cap, and they'll barely ice a full squad. Now take away whatever the Draisaitl, Bouchard and McDs' raises add up to. Will be fishing in the bargain bin for the foreseeable future, as well as slotting in the latest Ty Rattie out of their rocking farm system.

No Flames fan makes 50+ posts about how awesome the Oilers are. Its okay though this thread will make for some glorious bumping over the next 9 or so years
