Andersson has a spot to lose. Quite likely Valleyboy spends time in Stockton.

Kylington I can see being moved in a package deal.

Foo vs. Mangiapane will be interesting to watch.

Zero chance all 3 make the team IMO. But those are the guys getting close to NHL worthy. They are probably competing for 1-2 spots at most.

I saw something on flames nation that suggested kylington had actually been better than Anderssen 5v5 so I genuinely don't think he's as far away as we might think. Anderssen obviously is that PP Qb type, which is exciting.

I think amongst our defensive prospects we have a good mix of attributes.

I believe they were going to open a spot for Rasmus regardless.
The other two...
Random thought. What of they Platooned Valimaki and Kylington on the main roster. rotating them both from the farm with a more reliable 7th LHD to spot duty them in dry spells.

I think Huska's going to have a huge say in that and this could be the time we see 20-ish games from both of them.

Thus making 2 d men available to move for Forward depth.

Also I want to add Dube as a dark horse unless they're already stonewaling that idea and he will be developing full time in Stockton.

Pity. Because otherwise we could have the 2020 Flames set up:

(Pairings in no order, I just wanted Big 3 - Future Big 3 type pairings)

Kylington-Hamilton
Valimaki-Brodie
Giordano-Andersson

Well we've got to be careful about making the offseason assumption that the roster is always healthy. Probably better to think about it that one of our defensemen is almost always going to be injured so an additional kid will get their chances for a lot of the season because of that.

You don't wanna trade too many vets to hand spots to too many kids and then have injuries hit.

For example lets say you trade Stone and Brodie to open up spots for Valimaki and Andersson

Gio-Hamilton
Valimaki-Hamonic
Kulak-Andersson

Now imagine Gio and Hamonic got injured at the same time. Suddenly we've got Valimaki or Kulak on the top pairing and two rookies in the top 4 and likely 3 rookies in the top 6. YIKES

Treliving didn't build great depth on defense only to take an axe to it. Its too easy in the offseason to look at the roster and forget about injuries. Trade too many vets and we're screwed when injuries hit.

I think Treliving would trade one veteran dman at most. One rookie will likely make the top 6. Another will make it as soon as one of our dmen inevitably gets injured. I think it would be dangerous to open up too many spots for rookies because then your depth is too weak to sustain a couple injuries.

I really think Kylington makes the biggest push in camp/pre-season. I thought he was the best defensive prospect last camp, and was surprised he was sent down when he was. Flames also want to get quicker - he has elite skating ability.

Pity why? I'm talking about next fall and you're talking about 2020. By 2020 all 3 of those guys could easily be on the team.

But opening day of next season? I'd be shocked if two of the three youngsters were in our top 6.

I think Andersson, Mangiapane, Kylington and Foo are all ready. But I also think trading 2 vet dmen prior to training camp would be extremely risky.

Dube and Valamaki are pretty close as well but may benefit from a stint in the AHL. Training camp should be really exciting to see who makes the team.

Glad to see him listing some players already that he sees pushing for spots. Hopefully that means no PTOs or last minute acquisitions before the season starts and that the group has time to gel before the regular season starts.

Friedman has mentioned several times he thought the Flames were going to try to get back into the 1st round but it never made sense considering the assets they would have to give up would probably set the organization back for a likely mid to late 1st round pick who's not guaranteed to be better than any of the assets they would have to send a team for the pick. Once they gave up the 1st and two 2nds for Hamonic they really had no choice but to suck it up and accept they weren't picking early in this draft as trading roster players or good prospects to get back in the early rounds would have made the entire trade a one step forward, one step back affair.

If I'm not mistaken, Fox has confirmed that he's going back to school for another year.

Do you think he would have been pushing for a spot if he hadn't made that decision?

If only we could merge Kylington and Andersson into a single player...

He’d be named Valimaki.

It will be tough to see him go, but I have to think this is a dice-roll with Brodie this year. Could a new coach revitalize Olympic Canada potential Brodie, or was that Brodie a blip?

With Valimaki, Kylington, and Andersson all great options coming up behind him another year of the Brodie we've seen of late would find himself on the outside looking in very quickly.

My don't trade list ranked would be

Valimaki
Fox
Andersson
Kylington

I like them all, but Valimaki (left) has the balance and Fox (right) has the powerplay. With those two untouchable I'd rather keep Andersson who is a thinker over Kylington who is a skater.

I'm sketchy with confidence in Fox sticking around, but that's at least some potential to assure him there's a fit here - that would be a great fit for those two.

I'd be writing the same list too, and I think Kylington has the most potential to show us what we've been craving since old Brodie left.

I'm not as concerned with Fox

From the season ticket meeting summary

Quote:
- Fox back to school, likely for one more year. Only thing lacking is strength/explosiveness. Already a high-end puck handling defenceman and powerplay quarterback.
That fits with how I've always read him, and the fact that he's suggesting one more year and not 1 or 2 or wants to finish or we will see is pretty promising.

Doesn't hurt that the Flames have Gaudreau and Gillies around as US collegians on the roster
