To move up in the National Hockey League draft is costly.

Everyone knows that.

But trading assets — players or prospects — isn’t necessarily a price Brad Treliving and the Calgary Flames are willing to pay in order to take a stab at reclaiming their first-, second-, or third-round selections.

Getting into the first round, at the very least, is “probably not likely” according to the general manager.

“We’re not trying to get into the first round just to say we’re getting in the first round,” Treliving explained on Friday at the Scotiabank Saddledome, exactly a week prior to the kick-off of the 2018 NHL Draft in Dallas. “Can you get into the first round? Yep, you can. If you want to trade the players that it’s going to require to say ‘You got into the first round’ … to me, that doesn’t make a lot of sense. If there’s something there that makes sense to get into the first round, sure, we’d like to do it.

“Is it likely? Probably not.”

That’s not to say Treliving isn’t trying — or isn’t still trying to find a way to gain picks in, at least, the second and third rounds.

He does acknowledge this though:

And Treliving knows that their most valuable chips at the poker table are on their blueline — NHLers such as TJ Brodie, Dougie Hamilton and Michael Stone along with prospects like Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington and Adam Fox — if moves have to be made.

“That’s fair,” Treliving said. “You look at players that are under contract or players whose contracts are up, you look at the blueline and between the NHL team and those that were in Stockton, and we feel we’ve got a deep positional base there — which is a good thing. Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish, you’ve always got to give to get. And it’s not by accident. Four years ago, we wanted to get depth at the blueline.

“They’re valuable … we think we have some good assets there.”

Do you have any updates on the health of some of your players who were injured and out at the end of the season?

"Everybody has a clean bill of health. Matthew Tkachuk (concussion, last 12 games of the season), Sean Monahan (four surgeries -- wrist, two hernia and groin, last seven games), T.J. Brodie (concussion, neck, last nine games), Mike Smith (lower body, last three games) and Travis Hamonic (upper body, last four games) were all out at the end of the year but all have been cleared and are back training, doing their regular stuff. Touch wood, no issues as we look forward to training camp."

Also of note:
Says he can see Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Mangiapane, and Foo pushing for spots at camp.

Might get blasted for this, but good. The price to move into the first round would be way too high and I think would hurt us more in the long run than if we don’t pick at all this year.

It sucks not having a 1st but it’s really not the end of the world.

And even if we get a first round pick, apparently this year's draft is a pretty significant drop-off somewhere around pick #6 to #9.

You'd have to add a hell of a lot more to get #9. Fox as a centrepiece wouldn't get you more than a dial tone.

I don’t know what the price of a first round pick is. I am sure it’s high, as is the cost of trading one away.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Brodie traded for multiple picks.

Which is why you don’t move Fox now - as his value at the NHL level will soon outweigh that of a 9th overall pick if things keep progressing the way they have with him.

Meh, I wasn't expecting to get into the meaty part of the 1st round anyways. But if there's a chance a guy like Tolvanen or Kostin are there at the end of the round. Make some calls and see what happens.
