So right now it seems the bid does not guarantee that all three host countries qualify, that there will have to be another vote to determine if that will be the case. But if ####ing Qatar is getting to go automatically, FIFA should pity us and ensure we go automatically. The US and Mexico should have no issues qualifying on their own.

Also, Edmonton is....good.....in that we can drive up there if need be. So there's that.

With Edmonton hosting some games, Calgary will likely get to serve as the home base for one of the teams.

I wonder if this will mean a return to natural grass at Commonwealth? I assume it will at least temporarily for the World Cup games, but I wonder if the Esks will keep it?

And the next world cup shall be awarded to... the continent of Asia!

Seriously, this is too big an area, isn't it?

It's like five and a half hours from Edmonton to Mexico City for a flight. I think the longest distance for Russia 2018 is like a four and a half hour flight. Nevermind Euro 2020 with nine hour flights between Madrid/Dublin and Baku.

While it's nice Canada gets some games, it makes me wonder why the USA doesn't host on its own.

They probably have enough college stadiums to do this thing, without even even including NFL stadiums.

I'm assuming Azteca and BMO each get a semi final then Cowboys, Metlife or Rose Bowl host the final.

I don't know why I can't get excited for this.

Maybe once the details start to come out, things will change.

Nope. All matches from the quarterfinals onward are being hosted in the US. The Final is already set for Met Life stadium in New Jersey.

The tournament is actually 75% US hosted. Canada and Mexico get scraps. Doesn't mean I won't be finding my way to one of the games though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Canada does get a free pass, I believe it's expanding to 48 teams that year. There are going to be some trash games, which will probably be the Canadian hosted ones

I think this is the proposal, not officially what's happening:

https://www.theguardian.com/football...ll-work-united

Quote:
New qualification system including a Word Cup play-off tournament

The expansion to 48 teams has been a key plank of Gianni Infantino’s policy at Fifa. It expands the number of places at the finals available to teams of every confederation, including guaranteeing that a team from Oceania will always make the cut. The new allocation of spaces is:
AFC (Asia) – eight places (up from 4.5)
Caf (Africa) – nine places (up from 5)
Concacaf (North and Central America) – six places, of which three go to hosts (up from 3.5)
Conmebol (South America) – six places (up from 4.5)
OFC (Oceana) – one place (up from 0.5)
Uefa (Europe) – 16 places (up from 13)
In addition there will be two final spots available from a new World Cup play-off mini-tournament.

Why not have the World Cup host just be {Norm Macdonald voice} the world?

That had never been tried before.

32 teams right now is already pretty diluted with games such as Morocco vs Iran and Panama vs Tunisia, with 48 teams it will be even worse...

Yeah, if theres any event I'd want my City/Country to have no part of it would have to be the World Cup.

FIFA make the IOC look like amateur hour in terms of scams and embezzlement.

And we saw the exact same thing at the Euros, by increasing the number of teams you're not increasing the quality of the Tournament, you're diluting it.

Pure Cash Grab.

I don't know, the Euros take 24 out of 53 members, that's nearly half. Asian Cup and African Nations are going up to 24 as well. As more teams play in continental games, they get stronger.

The World Cup takes 32 out of 207. That's 15%. 48 would be 23%.

Yes some regions are bad but they have to grow somehow. The FAs need to know they have a chance at the big show. We could get some cool stories. Like war-torn Syria probably would have qualified for a 48 team world cup this time around.

Yeah but thats 207 FIFA delegated nations, some of those, actually a large number of those are just terrible and frankly, unlikely to improve no matter what just due to lack of population.

^^Yes what a cool story it'd be to see Syria lose 9-1 to Germany.

I just want to watch an in-his-prime Alphonso Davies bombing up the left wing, while drunk in the supporters section, in Edmonton during the World Cup. Is that too much to ask?

When was the last time multiple sub-100 ranked teams made the World Cup? Because starting 2022, it's gonna increase exponentially.
