Fire at the Paris Notre Dame Cathedral
I think that this worthy of it's own thread. I was there a few years ago and it really is magnificent (even for a non-catholic). Hopefully they put it out and there's not an enormous amount of damage.

There has been a spree of church vandalism in France this year.

Looks like it's around some scaffolding, wonder if there were renovations going on?

Oh wow, that's bad. Been there a few times, would be a shame to lose such a work of art.

Brutal, but it’s mostly made of stone if I remember correctly so hopefully that means it won’t be too damaged.

That's going to be a very large insurance payment.

“At this point, firefighters attacking the blaze are treating it as an accident somehow related to the "massive" construction happening at the cathedral, which was being renovated.
If there's a silver lining, many of the historic statues and paintings were removed just last night.
Meanwhile, the fact that the cathedral caught fire at the beginning of holy week, a time when catholic tourists have flocked to the city, added a layer of irony to the fire.
At this point, it looks like the cathedral's spire has been totally destroyed.”

A pic I saw on Twitter shows the fire coming through the stained glass windows. Just devastating. I've been there several times and it never failed to impress. It's hard to imagine it may not be there next time.

Latest reports are saying that the roof has collapsed.
Meanwhile, the usual suspects are already pointing the finger at Muslims. There’s almost certainly going to be retaliatory violence against mosques and individual people, even though legitimate sources are saying it’s simply human error.

Confirmed by CBC that the spire is down...just speechless.
Edit: The entire roof is down now apparently...

This one hurts. That cathedral was nothing short of spectacular. There is SO much history in that building. For this to happen, and on the week leading up to Easter, is devastating.

So it's just the structure and no people in harm?

Maybe they'll just have the facade there as they did with the St. Pauls ruins in Macau. That fire looks enormous.
