That said, I did just finally lock into 6c/kWh and $4.09/GJ for 5 years with Enmax last month. There were some big spikes in energy cost (15-20c / kWh) over the summer, and I figure those small spikes cost me more than the "markup" on the fixed costs when the prices are below that.

Were you able to lock in without losing your Easymax? I was under the impression that goes away, and another fee goes up if you make changes. I ran the math a little while ago and it didn't make sense to lose those.

Ya I was under the same impression as you, but when you go to the "Manage my plan" page, you can actually choose to edit your existing plan (leftmost option vs the other new plans to right) and add the 5 year fixed for either/both products. Might have been a new change, because I swore that back when they discontinued EasyMax that was a big gripe of mine. Oh well, works now!
First new bill under that plan came last week and indeed still got the EasyMax $ (as well as retaining some of the lower transaction fees)

Run to Enmax or Atco and never look back. I will never do business with Direct Energy again. When I had two houses on the go at once they messed things up so bad I had to spend days on the phone with overseas based customer service that had no clue. The lone company I have ever dealt with worse customer service than Shaw.

Enmax and Atco are the two rational choices. Direct Energy isn't better in any way, and has lock in fees and other bogus charges. You should switch.

I guess I need to start looking for deals. My $3/$0.03 deal with atco is up in January.
Probably won’t get something similar, but do deals come out often? I haven’t looked at anything in 3 years.

After being on RRO/Floating gas. I'm thinking of locking in through the winter.

We locked in. Seems lots of experts suggest increasing commodity prices this winter.

What rates are you locking in for? And for how long?

I'm just looking at my account now, I'm on easymax and my gas price shows "+99c/Gj" on floating rates.
My electricity is fixed.

I believe it was Ralph Klein who said to never lock your gas rates, because they are wildly unpredictable. I am not aware of any historical charts showing natural gas prices correlated with anything reliably. In the "More Money Than God" book, there was a fascinating story on Brian Hunter's betting on natural gas prices as one of the most spectacular successes and failures in history.

I fixed in electricity at $5.99 and that seems to be good as the floating rate has been $6.8 or (much) higher for all of 2021. Looks like the current fixed option is $6.99, so still a good idea to do that I think.
I'm floating gas right now and it's offering me fixed at $4.09 GJ whereas floating has been $2.60 or higher for 2021 (peaking at $4.00 but usually around $3.00). Given floating adds an extra $1 per GJ whereas fixed does not, it seems like fixing gas right now seems like a good bet too heading into winter?

Unfortunately, heading into winter is not a good predictor of gas prices rising. They may or may not depending on the production output levels and low/high winter temperatures all over US and Canada.

I just locked in my gas at $4.09
It's around that price for October, and looks to be heading upwards. I doubt it could possibly get lower than $3; however once it goes up it could just keep going.

For NG, check your recent winter bills to see how many GJ you normally use during a cold month. As the isolated cost of NG only accounts for 30-40% of the total NG bill (and much less in the summer), and the delivery and regulatory charges are either fixed or only scale with usage (not price of NG), picking the wrong way for fixed vs floating may only cost you $10-$30 in a month. Annoying but probably not budget busting.

NG is farts. It's one of the easier things to extract from the ground.

Is ENMAX good? I used to think we didn't have any choices in Chestermere (Direct Energy for gas and Epcor for electricity), but I saw recently that I can get ENMAX.
Seems simpler to get everything under one provider.
