And the sad realization for these poor souls begins

Quote:
The city estimates between 8,000 and 10,000 people a day will use the new Saddletowne and Martindale stations.

Saddleridge resident Siobhan Van Dusen said she’s already fed up with the noise of passing trains and honking horns.

“We were expecting another sound wall to be put up,” Van Dusen said. “The C-Train is right there."

Van Dusen said even with the windows closed, she can’t escape the noise. The train line runs through the middle of a residential neighbourhood.

"It's not a place that we will stay because of it."

Saddleridge resident? The only time train bells go off right beside anyone in Saddleridge is if a train goes into the tail track.

Story from the Herald this morning about the city buying one of the homes along the new route: http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Ci...730/story.html

Oddly, it's not one of the houses by the Martindale Station or even along one of the road crossings. It's at the end of one of the cul-de-sacs that the train runs past: https://maps.google.ca/maps?oe=utf-8...ed=0CCIQ8gEwAA

The city bought the house in 2009, when construction was starting, because the house is so close to where the construction was taking place. Now that the construction is done, the city will be putting the house back on the market. Because it isn't near a crossing, it probably wouldn't be that bad to live there compared to some of the other houses along the route.

Calgary is actually a very well planned out city compared to any other in north america but this is quite bad.

I thought this would be a good time to quote my own post. I thought this would be a problem. Whoever zoned residential next to the lrt tracks really dropped the ball.

Property too close to LRT

Kaitlin Lee Aug 28, 2012 06:26:11 AM

A new LRT line in Martindale may be a little too close for comfort to a nearby house.

The home was bought out by the city in 2009 - after plans for the CTrain made clear it would be difficult to live there.

The train track is just three metres outside the home's kitchen window.

The track is so close in fact; one must turn sideways to get up the outside stairwell.

Evelyn Brown tells The Calgary Herald she used to live at the house on Martinvalley Place N.E. until she complained the track squandered her property value and invaded her privacy.

The city has bought out properties before, but very rarely because of their proximity to new infrastructure.

Hopefully they dont do it for any of the other homes, people need to be held responsible for their own actions and not bailed out by the city.

The house was bought by the city, in 2009. It was bought because of safety issues during construction. It has no bearing on any current housing situation now that the trains are running.

I doubt the city will be able to get anywhere near $320 K for this.

If it was bought for contruction safety reasons; but the Herald article mentions that she called because of how close it would be to the tracks.

The developer made money selling an extra lot. The home buyer got a discount on their house due to the lot location. Then in the end the city paid full pop for the house and lot.

I will say, I do think the City should be a bit more responsible for maybe encouraging developers to not build a home that is parallel with the CTrain line, at least if the property backs onto the tracks then it gives it a bit of a buffer.

The lot is assessed at $285,500, but the city won't get that much for it.

The rant of course, is totally wrong (and I say this as someone who lives in the area).

Copying my post from Skyscraperpage:

Quote:
There are heated shelters on the platform, which are wind breaks, bus shelters are being installed in September, and there are plenty of benches. That "ugly station fence" was probably put there by the strip mall and forces people to walk an extra 50 feet if they want to get to the strip mall. Saddletowne Station got half of it's platform covered, which is the same amount that every new station is getting. Saddletowne station's light towers look really good, especially at night.

Brochures detailing all of the new bus route changes were mailed to everyone in the community, which included two free transit tickets, and the same brochures were available to anyone at the opening event.

I don't know how Martindale station is going to funnel wind any differently then if it had no canopy.

By all rights, those stations shouldn't even exist. Instead of building out to the peripheral developments (which only the people who live their benefit from), we could have been saving for a project like the downtown subway that improves the system for virtually all users.

If this week's ridership pattern continues going forward, this extension might be quite successful. Over the last three days my colleagues and I have noticed marked increase in ridership during our commutes. The case for the 8th Avenue subway is going to get much stronger in the N.E..

10th Street Station Closes Permanently September 15th

Quote:
In order to complete the tie-in of the 7 Avenue CTrain line with the West LRT line, and to accommodate the future operation of four-car trains, the CTrain station at 10 Street will be permanently closed as of Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. A new station is being completed at 11 Street S.W., called Downtown West-Kerby, located in front of the Kerby Centre. It will open for Calgary Transit customers when the West LRT opens for service.

Doors Open

Calgary Transit will be giving open house tours of two of their transit facilities (Oliver Bowen LRV Maintenance Facility and the Victoria Park Transit Centre) during the last weekend of September.

"when the WLRT opens for service" is almost certainly Dec 10 at this point.

Can't we just drop these hyphenated names? Kerby or Downtown West or Mewata or Millennium Park or anything but a hyphenated name. The more concise the station names, the better. It is a station name, not a list of everything nearby (I'm looking at you, SAIT-ACAD-Jubilee.) /rant

Good news about the potential opening date. I had a feeling that we'd see this thing open in 2012 after all, and I hope that it turns out to be the case.

/rant
