If I'm not mistaken he has said in a number of interviews in the years prior how it was his childhood dream to be bought out by his home town team.

Even millionaire players probably don't like paying double for normal goods and 5x for a apartment.

It's a very exhausting place on the system.
If you are rich, NYC is as good as it gets for many people.

There is a reason why athletes flock to that city when given a chance.

Surprised they couldn't just get a 5th rd pick from somebody at 50% retained...

I have been many times over the last 3 years, I can live on less than 50 a day eating out and enjoying the city if I want.
But only the rich can own, average price of a 2 bedroom Manhattan apartment is about $1.9m, while percentage wise property tax seems low at 0.80% that's still over $15,000 a year. the same apartment in Calgary would cost roughly $350k with $2300.00 in property taxes.

And $50.00 a day? It must be vanilla fast food without a beer! I was recommended to try out Virgil's BBQ times square for lunch, for me and my business partner it was $110 USD and we were still hungry.

I realize they "flock" there but how many stay there? I would bet very little retire there.

There is close to 10,000,000 people living there. I’m guessing that there are many, many people who find living in NYC quite acceptable.

I’m guessing that there are many NHL players who don’t retire where they played the majority of their hockey. Unless it was close to home in the first place.

Shattenkirk is "rich" though. Most of these athletes do alright.

I have family in NYC and the area, and they absolutely love it. I wouldn't mind living there for a year or two as well. Some people like the hustle of the Big Apple and are okay (and able to afford) with the costs associated with living there.

Would Shattenkirk fit on Calgarys blueline if he signed a one year 1m deal like a lot of buyouts do?

Could be something there. Takes a spot away from a kid though which I dont like. Would much rather have Shat than Petrovic if there was an opportunity.

I think it really depends on if they trade Brodie.

With Brodie:

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valimaki - Andersson

No room.

Without:

Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valimaki - ?????

Maybe there's a fit. Highly doubt Shattenkirk signs as a 7D anywhere.

I have a feeling Shattenkirk will be commanding a salary in the 2 million range at the very lowest. He still had solid seasons with the Rangers, he just got passed on the depth chart. He will sign with a team with a hole in their Top 4 (Oilers, Canadiens, Senators), trying to build up his value for a hopefully better contract next summer. He is only 30 years old.

Or do you see if Valimaki could transition and play his off-side?

Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Valimaki
Kylington - Hamonic

I think if anybody is playing their off side it would be Hanifin. I believe he has done it before under Peters.
