2014-15 Hartley Defense 195 points
2015-16 Hartley Defense 203 points
2016-17 Gulutzan Defense 177 points
2017-18 Gulutzan Defense 146 points
2018-19 Peters Defense 179 points with 8 games to go (will be 190+ at the end of year)

One coach believes in moving as a 5 man unit while two other coaches favour fast transition and have odd man advantages

Hartley did great with what he had, Gulutzan had arguably higher scoring defensemen than Peters. There's so many other things, but the total lack transition game and always having a D to D pass and give time for the other team to regroup was my biggest pet peeve about Gulutzan by far.

Gulutzan would play for Corsi and hope that Corsi will translate to winning, instead of playing well and aggressive, with Corsi being a side effect of great play.

Crazy stat : Flames had 53.5 Corsi in 2017-18 and the exact same 53.5 Corsi in 2018-19.

The best part is they can still break out as a 5 man unit when the situation calls for it (I remember a clinic in puck possession and passing late in the third from the monahan line and gio/brodie to completely neuter ottawa forechecking pressure last night). They have a lot more different looks this year, which makes containing them more difficult.

Peters has the forwards applying back pressure and the F3 (and if needed the strong side defender) pinching to force turnovers as the other team tries exit the zone. When successful, which given the talent on our team should be more often than not, this produces turnovers in a very dangerous part of the ice, creating 3 on 2s and 2 on 1s down low instead of 3 on 5s if you get the puck further down the ice. The Backlund goal last night was a textbook execution of this plan.

As a whole, there seems to be a lot more rotation and movement when they have control in the offensive zone, much more exciting than Gulutzan's static point shot based attacking scheme.
The underlying numbers may be similar but how they get those numbers is completely different and you've highlighted them well. They use the middle a lot more. It's just a more skillful game (which has a lot to do with the personnel).
