Hmm so no agreement it would seem on the first goal, how did Smith look on the second goal? I try not to watch games in which Mike Smith starts...

None of the goals were his fault. Also Rittich was sick so this is about the least controversial performance of his season, or at least should be.

From a Flames fan's perspective who isn't a Smith fan, Smith had a really good game tonight. Bailed his teammates out on numerous occasions (breakaways, 2 on 1's). Goaltending was the least of our issues tonight, anyone who says different is being irrational.

No it's not. A personal choice based on watching Smith start the year letting in those weak goals he'd allow seemingly once and sometimes twice a game. Looks like I'll have to in the playoffs though as it seems like Peters and I'd guess, the goalie coach, might be preferring Smith over Rittich.

These are some pretty soft starts Smith has been getting plus Rittich is sick anyway

Each to his own. It was an honest question.

As ironic as it may sound with how critical I have been on Smith this season, im actually not too gung ho about who starts the playoffs and who doesn’t because I know that we’ll be seeing Rittich and Smith this post season regardless. I could easily see a win and you’re in type of scenario happening and whoever gets the hottest will continue to play.
As anxious as I am over Mike Smith’s random brain farts, his play as of late has at the very least quelled my fear that he’ll blow up an entire series for the team like Elliott did in 2017. Verrrrry interested to see who finally ends up in that 8th spot though as I think that will play a big factor in who starts.

Update ...
Smith has his stiffness of opponent drop quite a bit for 5 and 10 games, but also burns off his last rough start (Minnesota game) in the last five to spike his save percentage in that time period.
Code:
Player # Last 5 Last 10 Last 15 Last 20 QS%
Smith 39 0.929 0.924 0.914 0.903 51%
Opp 0.488 0.519 0.534 0.537
Rittich 42 0.920 0.895 0.896 0.898 62%
Opp 0.545 0.545 0.543 0.541

Even when Smith makes a great save, he doesn't look particularly athletic doing so, and is often out of position after the save.
I don't believe he has the physical attributes to play all that well anymore.
He'll rely upon the Fames superior defensive play more often than not.
He won't hold up against a superior offensive team getting lots of high danger chances.
He had only 3 high danger chances 5v5 last night.

Man this site and their hate for Smith is so sad. He was great last night and since March 2nd has been awesome with no bad goals

It takes a while to rebuild trust. Longer for some.

It is kind of funny. People clamoring for the return of Mike Smith from the start of last year. Well, here he is.
They're still not happy.

I get that, I think we all are gun shy because of his age. But I like this guy and always have. Rittich pushing him is great

That would make us happy as well. Surprised, but happy.

Everyone would be happy the team is winning but the ones who have a hate on for him bad (you can not trust him and still not be a hater) would also be annoyed that it was him in net. The pitchforks would be ready for the moment he falters and until then they would either be silent or they would dig for any little silly thing to complain about.

Smith is climbing slowly towards the NHL league-average save percentage.
According to hockey-reference.com, the league-average save percentage this year is .905. Smith sits at an even .900.
To reach the average mark, Smith would have to stop his next 50 shots against.

I feel like Smith might start game 1 of the playoffs at the rate he's going.
And I'm not sure I'm overly opposed to it.

I think we are safely at the point where it shouldn’t matter who starts in the playoffs. Both goalies have looked good, and I don’t think one is playing obviously better than the other right now.
It’s a good problem to have, I think.

As long as neither goalie pulls an Elliot during the playoffs we should be fine.
