At some point, Backlund has to start putting the puck in the net. Guy can't score to save his life this season

Scoring Winger
|
It’s time for the Tkachuk-Monahan-Lindholm first line. Johnny is either fighting a nagging injury or playing scared, and there is zero indication he is going to turn it around. And Backlund will never score again it seems.
So, let’s put the guys who are producing together and see what happens. Because Chucky is totally wasted with Backlund, and right now you could put Johnny with either McJesus or a fist full of hundreds in a whorehouse, and he wouldn’t score in either circumstance.

Clearly 5 on the ice while the Penguins have possession.

Really weird to me that Dube plays 5 minutes in the first and then 5 minutes for the rest of the game. Anyone have an idea why he was essentially benched?

Not talking about the previous games where he’s been pretty poor. I’m talking about the chance he had tonight that he missed by an inch. Not ready to call that miss a blunder nor am I ready to call him useless like the previous poster.

It absolutely is.
For one, the 2 Penguins changing are just by the far blueline in the screengrab. The replacements are only allowed to hop on when the first 2 are 5 feet from the bench. From centre to either blueline is 25 feet.
And secondly, because Kahun buttonhooks back towards the benches with the puck all 4 of the changing Penguins have caused confusion for the 2 Flames defenders. A good ref would have at least blown it dead for an illegal substitution.

And he looked good, too. Needs to play a lot more than that.

Brodie looked awesome all night. Best game from him in a long time. He brings such a great dynamic to the team. This should be a good stepping stone for him.
Flames played their best game in a long time. Guentzel is amazing. Wow, he's come a long way since last time l watched him play.

Sure, if you want to look at that play in a vacuum, unlucky miss. But if you look at his body of work this season, he HAS been useless when given great scoring opportunities.

The frame I grabbed a couple of posts up has all 5 skaters well on the ice and the puck clearly on Kahun's stick.

That doesn't really matter though as Kahun wasn't the one changing. Guentzel doesn't receive the pass until the others have completed their change.
The change however was made illegally as the 2 new Penguins jumped on when the first 2 were at least 20 feet away from the bench still.
It's a textbook illegal substitution at least if the refs don't have the guts to call a too many men penalty.

Scoring Winger

Dube's ice time was mostly due to special teams and taking short shifts.
4 power plays ate up half the period, so he only got 2 shifts in the second. But he played 8 shifts and about 5 minutes in the third (Gaudreau had 9 and 6 minutes, for comparison).

Lucic/Ryan/Dube we’re responsible for the second Penguins goal. Didn’t play much after that. Plus with Ryan on the PK and Lucic getting a top line shift after the PK, Dube misses a few shifts.

NHL team not getting any breaks, exhibit A.
Why is it that we have been shorthanded in a few OTs now, and that isn't worth a call?
So awesome that Dube scored one!

Peters benched a young kid after making a mistake? Yeah, that’ll teach him!
...to play scared of making a mistake.
Not a bad effort, but this team just lost to a Crosby-less Penguins. Tough to watch the lack of execution from the top players during 5v5 play.

What are you arguing exactly?
https://nhl.bamcontent.com/images/as...-file/file.pdf
Rule 74 – Too Many Men on the Ice
74.1 Too Many Men on the Ice - Players may be changed at any time
during the play from the players’ bench provided that the player or
players leaving the ice shall be within five feet (5') of his players’
bench and out of the play before the change is made.
Both Penguins that were coming off the ice were by the Penguins blueline when their replacements hopped on the ice.
