Default What is Bill Peters?

so the Trade/Keep Johnny thread has sort of spilled into a coaching discussion and figured it would be best to split that out, because it's interesting and worth further investigation.

with no particular expertise on it, I'm wondering about the "Babcock Coaching Tree" that's been brought up. If I understand correctly, our last two coaches have roots in the school of Babcock, who himself is under fire in Toronto for what's seen as improper skill player utilization.

which then is the real Peters system? the one from last year that was white hot for 4 months and gave them enough of a lead to finish 2nd in the west? or the one we're seeing right now that has the ability to put lots of shots on net, but doesn't appear to generate a ton of truly dangerous chances, and worse is really prone to odd man rushes against?

I don't think it's fair to blame this team's struggles on BP. They are getting ravished by terrible ES shooting percentages and are bound to regress back to the norm.

On top of that, take a look at this roster. it is far from perfect.

Backlund and Frolik are not good enough offensively to be second line players.

Monahan is very valuable, however he is not an elite number 1 center. He needs to be better defensively.

Gaudreau, while extremely skilled tends to fade into the background as games get tighter.

Valimaki has been injured all season.

To Treliving's credit he has attempted to get pieces for this team (Kadri, Zucker, Stone) but they haven't worked out.

A Mark Jankowski-like bust?

May or may not resemble various forms of Joe Colborne.

A good head coach with a decent but by far great club at the moment. Look at the players not the coach.

A mediocre coach who has produced mediocre results, except for one very exceptional stretch of a few months.

I think he's a fine but not great coach. I do think that Flames management have been a little shy to spend in the area of coaching. Kinda picking up bargain guys with something to prove. Skipped out on Bruce Boudreau to hire Gulutzan and Barry Trotz to hire Peters.

I am not blaming Peters... yet.

It’s become apparent that the team is the common denominator and not the coach. They get under a new coach, play their best hockey. But, then they tend to tune him out as time progresses.

Trotz would've been a dream. His clubs consistently make the playoffs. Which is the next step we need to take here.

He is the coach who is currently ranked #2 in all time winning percentage for the Calgary Flames.

It wouldn't shock me if some of the better coaches may have been approached and passed on the opportunity to coach Calgary, although it also wouldn't shock me if money was a factor.

He's a coach who showed up, employed successful tactics such as his line blender, usage of youth and tight systems.

And then abandoned all those things at the all star break last year, sticking to the same lines, replacing youth with Fantenberg, and failing to identify the D pairing which was absolutely failing at executing in the playoffs.

I agree Trotz would have been great, but what are the chances he would even want to coach in Calgary? This city/market is consistently ranked one of the least desirable in the entire league.

You got a list of the rankings? I’ve always been curious about this. Also is it some sort of pool done by the PA?

I mean he took a job with the Islanders. Granted, they are close to a great market I suppose but the team was a tire fire

A good coach saddled with a star player who is making scared, soft, careless plays all over the ice. Gaudreau has not been a good possession player this year. Not sure many coaches would have the Flames in a better position with the way Gaudreau has been playing this year.

I’m putting way more blame on Gaudreau than Peters for this season. Our supposed best player has been bad.
