One of the many great characters on an iconic show.

He also did a lot of voice work in his later years, including many Disney films. He provided the voice for both the narrator and Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast.

RIP, Major Winchester really changed the dynamic of the show and allowed them to go deeper. He was a brilliant actor

He has the difficult task of replacing the weaselly villain Frank Burns on the show and he did as a much more multi-dimensional somewhat sympathetic character who unlike Burns was competent

I still remember the episode where he lost a young soldier and went back to his tent and put on one of his records, and then ended up smashing the record.

RIP Sir

David Ogden Stiers. I remember how you skateboarded to work every day down busy LA streets. How, once you glided into Stage 9, you were Winchester to your core. How gentle you were, how kind, except when devising the most vicious practical jokes. We love you, David. Goodbye. @alanalda

He was the best thing to happen to the show after they went away from Frank. Made the show significantly more complete. The orphans Christmas episode was my favourite of the series.

I believe this was the alst episode where he was training a group of soldiers to play a specific piece of music. the group was being transferred and was in an accident or were attacked.

His character mentions later on how music was his way to escape life there, but how it would now remind him of his time there or something to that effect.

some great observations here on his character versus frank burns

He was a terrific actor and his portrayal of Major Winchester was amazing.

One of my favorite moments for him (and the whole series) was in the letters episode (around 23:10 start).

And in related news, it was the 35th anniversary of the final episode
