IMO, as a GM you're just as much to blame, keeping bad people in the wrong places - as the guy who put them there in the first place.

Sure but it probably took a while to evaluate his staff before he started getting rid of them. Too often a new manager comes in without knowing the lay of the land and gets rid of the wrong people, such as what happened to St. Louis.

Coming in from coaching probably didn't help either, drafting and development being the area he would have had the least involvement in San Jose.

To some extent one can look at most of Sutters weaknesses and see them as a logical extension of taking something of a coachs approach to the game.
