I hope the Oilers have been scouting as closely as this guy. Get 'er done Chiarelli!

Absolutely true for point production, but not for overall player quality and contribution to team winning.
Agreed. Crosby, for example, has played the best hockey of his career in the last two seasons. Playoffs last year was when he was really at his apex and it was not about pure points production.

The article asks if Wideman would take a 1 year $2.5 Million contract?

Just speculating here, but if the Oilers drop that offer on the table Wideman would have it signed before the staples hit the veneer top.

Barely made it past THIS gem:

"Peter Chiarelli has fixed the blueline in two major hockey cities, Boston and now Edmonton. In each case, he made a big free agent signing (Zdeno Chara in Boston, Andrej Sekera in Edmonton"

Comparing Chara, to Sekera...?

CHARA......to.....SEKERA.....?!?

CHara....t......S.....<sigh.>

I almost stopped at the wideman was untouchable back in 2015. Except they meant he was super important to the team. Whatever makes them feel better when Chia pet signs him to reunite the Russell Wideman duo.

I think the Oilers could do worse than Wideman actually. He does plug a need for them, as they do need a guy on the point with a big shot. Wideman is almost notorious now for his inconsistency and need to have confidence. That is two really down years in a row now, so who knows? He may really be done.

I think his chances of getting 2.5 million are pretty low - I think getting a bona fide contract offer from any team is probably pretty low this off-season. Still, I would bet he signs a PTO somewhere that is desperate for an offensive defencemen with the ability to shoot the puck, and he does provide leadership as well.

He still can be an asset on the right team with the right hole, but it assumes that the refs are impartial, and that he manages to gain a bit of confidence. I think it is a coin flip at this point in time to see him in the NHL next season, and having this year as an expansion year is what (in my mind) makes those odds that large.

He should get a PTO somewhere. What happens next is the really big question.

If Wideman signed for about $1 million and plays sheltered minutes for the Coilers on the third line and secondary PP, it's not the worst hockey transaction in the world.

Respectfully disagree. Or wait... Did you post that in case chia sees this? In that case Wideman is able to play a physical game,he hits hard. Ask Don Henderson. Hum.,... To soon? But seriously, he's slow, and totally unable to put his "howitzer shot" on target. Couple that with the pervcived or real Wideman effect with the refs, I can't see him getting a contract next year. As for Edmonton, I imagine that he's close to a decade older then the average age of the team. Can't see this being a fit, but would absolutely LOVE to see the experiment. Kinda like a car wreck, hard to look away.

I 100% agree with this. Wideman is done in the NHL as a regular player. He's slower than molasses, can't play defense all that well, and can no longer get his best asset, his shot, to work for him. He still has some offensive instincts, but often puts himself WAY out of position to make an offensive play and doesn't have the wheels to come anywhere close to getting back in the play.

At this point, Griffin Reinhart is a better NHL player, and that's not saying much.

The guy lost his spot to Bartkowski (a player I don't feel should be taking a regular shift in the NHL) for a 3rd pairing spot with the Flames. Think about that for a second. Some players careers end very quickly and this is the case for Wideman as he's no longer a viable full time NHL defenseman.

It's pretty hard to ignore that the Flames started winning as soon as they benched him.

CP tried for years to trade Wideman and now that he is gone, we are trying to stick him on the Oilers. Hilarious. He's not going to the Oilers, or any other NHL team.

Guys Guys Guys

Chia needs to make this move, its a really cagey move that would instantly improve the Oilers blueline, especially if they can't resign Russell.

Wideman, might be slow, he might lack agility, heck he might not really play defense well, he might be a kleptomaniac, but on the plus side, he's got those steely eyes, a big shot and his last name is two syllables just like Mc-David and Dra-Saitl. Signing him would be something that the possible GM of the year shouldn't be able to resist.

As well if you need to address or expand the leadership vacuum in the dressing room, Dennis is your guy. As well he never screws up coffee orders and puts just the right amount of butter on the popcorn.

Think of the children man, and how they could look up to Dennis and his story of redemption. Heck Katz could sell the movie rights and hold all of the "Casting" sessions with starlets that he wants.

Furthermore, don't worry about the cap, I mean financially with the new, the sky is the limit!

Glad we have the fan opinion, now let's hear from actual GM's that, at times, contradict armchair GM's and their master plans.

Because GM's around the league don't make dozens of bad signings every year.

Just have to disagree then. If someone wants a PP specialist with a cannon of a shot from the point, Wideman is good enough, especially if you need a vet to fill that role. Unless you have a discernibly better 6th defenseman with an all-round better game, then the Wideman's of the world will get signed, even if for minimum value and a short contract. And probably the type of signing closer to training camp than July 1 when all the good parts have been picked through

GMs saw the same thing we (and hockey pundits) saw all of last season, that the Wideman Effect was real. No one is touching him.

If you thought signing a 32 y/o Gaborik for 7 years @ $5 million dollars was a bad idea, then congratulations, you've outsmarted an NHL GM.

Wideman effect countered by the McDavid effect with the refs. And then some.
